Former Elizabeth Forward basketball standout Tre Mitchell, who left the WPIAL for a prep school in Connecticut, committed to Massachusetts on Friday.
Mitchell revealed his decision on Twitter.
The 6-foot-9, 230-pound center transferred to Woodstock Academy in 2017 after playing two seasons at Elizabeth Forward. He quickly became that state’s top boys basketball player and collected 30 scholarship offers with Pitt, Duquesne and Penn State among them.
He announced a list of six finalists March 12 that included Georgia Tech, Indiana, Providence, Syracuse, UMass and Virginia Tech.
Rivals.com rates Mitchell as a four-star recruit and the 72nd-best prospect nationally in the 2019 graduating class. His offers list grew to include Arkansas, Tennessee, Kansas State, Louisville, Notre Dame, Seton Hall and many others.
Mitchell was named Connecticut Gatorade Boys Basketball Player of the Year earlier this month after he led Woodstock Academy to a 39-2 record and a berth in the National Prep Championship quarterfinals. He averaged 16.6 points, 13.5 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game.

His college commitment finalizes a recruiting process that started more than two years ago when Mount St. Mary’s offered him his first scholarship in January 2017.
UMass went 11-21 overall last season and 4-12 in the Atlantic 10 under second-year coach Matt McCall.
