Waynesburg’s Scott Benco claims top distance in state javelin rankings

Waynesburg javelin thrower Scott Benco took over the top spot in the state rankings with a 192-foot, 6-inch toss Saturday, a distance that also ranks him among the nation’s best this season.

The senior earned the personal-best at the Tri-State Track Coaches Association Outdoor Championship in West Mifflin.

Benco’s throw is two feet, four inches better than the second-best throw in Pennsylvania this season, a mark held by Hershey’s Mark Suminski (190-2). The distance ranks 11th nationally, according to MileSplit.com statistics.

His personal-best before Saturday was 175 feet.

Benco finished second in the WPIAL Class AA championship last season (162-0) and 16th in the state (154-3).
