Area athletes compete on first day of Penn Relays

Oakland Catholic senior Jayla Ellis earned a seventh-place medal in the high school girls long jump Thursday at the annual Penn Relays Carnival at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.

She recorded a best leap of 18 feet, 4.25 inches. The winning jump covered 19-6.

Ellis’ Eagles teammate, fellow senior Hannah Shupansky, claimed 19th in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10 minutes, 17.36 seconds.

Brownsville junior Gionna Quarzo, No. 1 in the 1,600 and 3,200 runs on this week’s WPIAL AA girls performance list, placed 13th in the 3,000 meters.

South Park’s Maura Huwalt took fifth in the discus (149 feet, 6 inches).

Upper St. Clair’s girls 400 and 1,600 relays also took part in the Penn Relays on Thursday. The 1,600 relay took 234th out of 422 teams with a time of 4:16.27, while the 400 relay came in 250th out of 601 teams with a time of 51.74.

The Penn Relays, which attracts athletes from hundreds of schools in more than a dozen states, will continue Friday and conclude Saturday evening. There are at least 12 hours worth of events each day.
