Chartiers-Houston set out to accomplish several small goals this season.

The first goal on that list was crossed off Tuesday as the Bucs defeated Bentworth, 12-2, in five innings to clinch the Section 3-2A title outright for the first time since 2015.

“We’ve been working really hard in the offseason,” Bucs pitcher Ella Brookman said. “We wanted to work on small goals; this was one of them. Achieving that means a lot, and we’re going to keep working.”

After two quick outs in the first inning, the Bearcats got three straight baserunners on and took an early 2-0 lead.

But in the Bucs’ half of the first inning, they sent nine hitters to the plate, scoring five runs on three singles and a mammoth home run by freshman Micolette Kloes, her first of the season to take a 5-2 lead.

After Bentworth’s first-inning surge, Brookman settled down in the circle for the Bucs, allowing only two base runners in the final 13 hitters she faced. Brookman finished with eight strikeouts and retired the last six Bentworth hitters she faced.

Brookman also did her part at the plate, going 2 for 4 and driving in a run in in the Bucs’ fifth straight win.

Chartiers-Houston (15-3, 11-1) had four hitters record multiple RBIs, and all nine starters recorded at least one hit, including senior catcher Kasey Scears, who went 3 for 3 with three RBIs.

Bentworth (9-10, 5-7) will finish its regular season at home Wednesday against West Greene, while Chartiers-Houston will wait to see where, when and who its next opponent will be in the WPIAL playoffs.

Both teams have already clinched a playoff spot but will have to wait until Thursday to find out where they stand in a stacked Class 2A field. The playoff pairings will be announced at noon Thursday on the TribLive High School Sports Network.
