SHIPPENSBURG — When Waynesburg senior Daniel Layton crossed the finish line after winning the Class AA 110-meter hurdles Saturday, he had a big smile on his face.

That’s because he accomplished something he almost wasn’t allowed to do.

A clerical error by his coach, who is his dad Rick, almost cost him a shot at competing in one of his best events — the 110 hurdles.

It took an appeal to the PIAA to allow the WPIAL to correct the error.

The WPIAL was following its deadline rules and originally denied Layton’s request to correct the mistake. But the PIAA overturned the WPIAL’s decision and allowed Layton to compete.

He won the WPIAL title and followed it up by winning a PIAA gold medal Saturday at the PIAA Class AA championships at Shippensburg’s Seth Grove Stadium. Layton’s winning time was 14.53 seconds.

“I was pleased I got the opportunity to compete and win the state title,” Layton said. “It was a big relief.”

Things didn’t go as planned in the pole vault. A shoulder injury and a broken pole on Thursday bothered Layton, and he failed to make the height to continue.

“I think I let things get into my head,” Layton said. “There is no excuse for me not making it over the bar.”
