Leechburg was on Apollo-Ridge’s 4-yard line and trailing by a touchdown with a minute left in the first half of a Week Zero matchup.

A Leechburg touchdown would mean a tie score and a swing of a momentum heading into the second half. Apollo-Ridge junior linebacker Logan Harmon knew the situation and understood his team needed a stop. So, he went out and made a play.

When Leechburg’s running back was stood up at the line of scrimmage, the 5-foot-9 linebacker came flying around the outside, inserted himself into the mass of big bodied linemen and came out the other side with the football.

Then, he spun out of the pile and took it 96 yards to the end zone, giving the Vikings a 14-0 lead at the break.

“If they balance it back up there and we go to 7-7, it’s a completely different ball game,” Apollo-Ridge coach John Skiba said. “Then he rips the ball out and takes it the other way. The momentum just changed that quickly.”

Not only did Harmon play lights-out on the defensive end, the junior running back rushed for 180 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries as the Vikings earned a 28-14 victory.

Harmon said there’s a lot more to come.

“This is definitely just the beginning for me. I want to keep working at it and keep moving forward,” said Harmon, who also is a wrestler.

Harmon is the subject of this week’s A-K Valley football Q&A:

Did you expect a game like that to start your junior season?

I didn’t expect to have the strip for the touchdown, but I knew coming into the game that I was going to have a lot of opportunities to score a few touchdowns and make some big plays.

What do you think attributed to your game the most?

Oh, definitely the offensive line. They’ve improved so much from last year to this year, and we were just able to work as a team and move the ball.

What are your expectations for yourself this year?

I’d like to play a whole season of varsity football because I’ve never been able to do that because I’ve always gotten injured. But I want to lead the team in rushing and tackles. I really just want to be a leader on the team.

Do you prefer offense, defense or both?

I love them both. I love tackling on defense, and I love running people over on offense. So I’d have to say both.

How do you think wrestling translates to football?

It helps with my stamina, my endurance and my fight. On defense, it helps with tackling because we are always taking shots in wrestling. Just overall strength too.

What’s your favorite wrestling move?

A double-leg takedown.

Favorite NFL player?

Luke Kuechly.

Favorite college team?

Pitt.

Favorite meal?

Spaghetti or lasagna.

Were you excited for school to start last week?

Yeah, I’m excited for school because of football season, but I’m just excited to get back.

What’s your favorite subject?

Probably math.
