The first event on the Westmoreland County Coaches Association fall schedule is the girls golf championship, set for Wednesday at Champion Lakes Golf Club. Play begins at 9:30 a.m., and the tournament is nine holes.

Last year was the first time a team champion was crowned, and Greensburg Central Catholic – the four-time defending WPIAL Class AA champion – won the title with a score of 159.

Penn-Trafford was second at 190.

GCC returns WCCA medalist Meghan Zambruno, who shot even-par 37, and third-place finisher Ella Zambruno (41). The twins are sophomores. Penn-Trafford junior Lauren Barber also is one to watch. She was fourth last year (46).

The boys golf tournament will be Sept. 12 at Latrobe Elks.

Net gains

Four Westmoreland girls teams made the Western Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association preseason rankings.

In Class AAAA, Hempfield is No. 6 and Latrobe is No. 9. Franklin Regional checks in at No. 8 in Class AAA, and Greensburg Central Catholic is No. 5 in Class A.

In the red

Belle Vernon’s Jake Caldwell has been on his golf game. The senior was under-par through five matches with a 33.6 nine-hole average.

He has yet to shoot higher than 35 and recently recorded four birdies in a row.

“He works really hard at his craft,” Leopards coach Melvin Gouker said. “Jake is very meticulous and methodical on every shot, making sure everything is perfect.”

Jumping in

The Norwin girls soccer team will delve into Section 1-AAAA play and, at the same time, open the season Tuesday when the Knights visit Hempfield.

Norwin is ranked No. 3 in the Trib’s WPIAL rankings.
