High school roundup for Aug. 31, 2019: Fox Chapel runners sweep Gateway Invitational

Grace Sisson and Brooke Krally took the top two spots as Fox Chapel swept the Gateway Invitational on Saturday in Boyce Park.

Sisson finished with a time of 20 minutes, 56 seconds while Krally posted a time of 21:16. North Catholic’s Alaina Hicks and Julia Zalenkski finished third and fourth with times of 21:23 and 21:25, respectively. Gina Bolla of Baldwin rounded out the top five with a time of 21:49. Fox Chapel finished first with 60 points, followed by Plum (77), Gateway (89), Kiski Area (96) and North Catholic (107).

For the boys, Fox Chapel senior Christian Fitch defended his individual title with a time of 17:37. Riverview’s Mason Ochs and Gid Deasy finished second and third with respective times of 17:56 and 17:57. Bethel Park’s Antonio Burkhart (17:59) and Baldwin’s Teddy Boehm (18:08) completed the top five. Fox Chapel won with 40 points, followed by Riverview (78), Baldwin (79), Bethel Park (151) and Gateway (159).

Football

Western Beaver 30, South Side Beaver 28 — Thaddeus Gray completed 7 of 8 passes for 154 yards and two scores, and Cam Irvine added 113 yards and a score to lead Western Beaver (2-0) to a nonconference win.

Boys soccer

Bentworth 8, Uniontown 0 — Brian Hustava scored four goals and Leyton Hustava added two to lead Bentworth (1-0) to victory over Uniontown (0-1) at the Fayette County tournament. Jaxon Selvoski and Christian Hete combined for the shutout.

Bethel Park 2, Shaler 0 — In nonsection play, Nick Walker and Liam Fink scored as Bethel Park (1-0) beat Shaler (0-1). Michael Francus picked up the shutout in goal.

South Fayette 1, Montour 0 — Chad Eldridge scored five minutes into the second half as South Fayette (1-0) beat Montour (0-1) in nonsection play. Austin Rees recorded the shutout.

West Allegheny 6, Exeter Township 1 — In the East-West Classic at Highmark Stadium, six different players scored for West Allegheny (1-1) in its win over Exeter Township (0-2).

Fleetwood 3, Quaker Valley 2 — Hunter Smith scored in the first minute of overtime to give Fleetwood (2-0) the win over Quaker Valley (1-1) at the East-West Classic at Highmark Stadium. Dom Reiter scored both Quaker Valley goals.

Burrell 4, Waynesburg 2 — Jacob Guerrini scored twice and added an assist to lead Burrell (1-0) to victory at the Chartiers-Houston tournament.

Cathedral Prep 3, Deer Lakes 2 — Michael Sullivan scored twice for Deer Lakes (0-1) as the Lancers fell to Cathedral Prep (1-0) in nonsection action.

Connellsville 3, Highlands 1 — Lucas Hammerle scored two goals and Luke Peperak added one as Connellsville (1-0) beat Highlands (0-1) at the Belle Vernon tournament.

Freeport 3, Armstrong 0 — Hunter Hardin, Isaac Wetzel and Addison Stewart scored as Freeport (1-0) beat Armstrong (0-1) in nonsection play. Luke Heider recorded the shutout.

Leechburg 6, Ellwood City 1 — Darek Baustert scored a hat trick as Leechburg (1-0) won the program’s first game with a nonsection victory.

Plum 2, Kiski Area 0 — Darius Flowers and Cannon Kuchinik scored to lift Plum (1-0) to a win at its host tournament.

Franklin Regional 3, Peters Township 0 — The defending WPIAL champion Panthers (1-0) got goals by Garrett Beaver, Zach Lorenz and Blake Cooper to defeat the host team at the Peters Township tournament.

Belle Vernon 5, Monessen 0 — Daniel Sassak scored three times in the first half, and Daniel Gordon and Nathaniel Kikel added second-half goals to lead Belle Vernon (1-0) to a victory at the host tournament. TJ Watson made four saves to earn the shutout.

Hempfield 5, Greensburg Salem 0 — The Spartans (1-0) scored a shutout victory in a nonsection season opener.

Norwin 1, Seneca Valley 0 — A day after defeating Baldwin, 5-1, Norwin moved to 2-0 with a shutout over the defending WPIAL Class AAAA champion Raiders (1-1) at the Intersection tournament at Chartiers Valley.

Ringgold 3, Southmoreland 0 — The Scotties fell to 0-2 after 3-0 losses to Obama Academy and Ringgold on Saturday in the Canon-McMillan tournament.

Thomas Jefferson 3, Penn-Trafford 0 — Marty Richter scored twice to lift Thomas Jefferson (1-0-1) past Penn-Trafford (0-1) at the Peters Township tournament.

Girls soccer

Bethel Park 3, South Fayette 1 — At the Avonworth tournament, Megan Mathias, Sophia Galietta and Alena Kauric scored for Bethel Park (1-0) in its win over South Fayette (0-1). Anna Hertzler scored South Fayette’s goal.

Moon 3, West Allegheny 0 — Hailey Longwell scored two goals to lead Moon (1-0) to a nonsection win at West Allegheny (0-1).

Thomas Jefferson 2, Avonworth 1 — Julia Saltzman and Emily Kane scored for Thomas Jefferson (1-0) in its win over the host team of the Avonworth tournament.

Apollo-Ridge 5, DuBois 1 — Mayce Anthony scored three goals, and Emily Bonelli had two as Apollo-Ridge (1-1) won at the Indiana tournament.

Burrell 3, Indiana 0 — Megan Malits and Allie Vescio each scored a goal and goalkeeper Delaney O’Brien made seven saves for Burrell (2-0) in a win at the Indiana tournament.

Carlynton 6, Riverview 1 — Senior forward Savannah Sevacko netted a hat trick as Carlynton (1-0) scored five goals in the first half over Riverview (0-1) in the Carlynton tournament. Senior midfielder Francesca Lio scored for the Raiders.

Deer Lakes 3, Villa Maria (Erie) 0 — Lilly Litrun scored a goal and had an assist as Deer Lakes (1-0) defeated Villa Maria (Erie) in nonsection play. Madeline Boulos and Abigail Boulos added goals for Deer Lakes while Jaiden Cutright recorded the shutout.

Plum 9, Penn Hills 0 — Kaitlyn Killinger and Brynn Emahizer scored two goals each to lead Plum (1-0) to a nonsection shutout over Penn Hills (0-1).

Canon-McMillan 4, Franklin Regional 0 — In nonsection play, Sarah Powell scored twice to lead Canon-McMillan (1-0) to victory over Franklin Regional (0-1).

Fox Chapel 2, Penn-Trafford 1 (OT) — Emma Rain scored on an assist from Sarah Nguyen, but Penn-Trafford (0-1) lost to Fox Chapel (1-0) in a nonsection game.

Greensburg Central Catholic 5, Seton LaSalle 0 — The Centurions (0-1) opened the season with an impressive shutout victory in nonsection play.

Latrobe 8, Monessen 0 — Maddie Delucio notched the hat trick as Latrobe (1-0) downed Monessen (0-1) at the Belle Vernon tournament. Sofia DeCerb picked up the shutout.

Mt. Pleasant 11, Jeannette 1 — Megan Liberoni and Mackenzie Leeder scored three goals each as Mt. Pleasant (1-0) defeated Jeannette (0-1) in a nonsection matchup.
