Penn Hills softball standout Yasmine Logan chooses Ohio University

Senior center fielder and pitcher Yasmine Logan has been dreaming about playing college softball for years. She will get that chance at the NCAA Division I level.

Even though the season is months away, Logan wanted to focus on the upcoming season and made a commitment to play at Ohio University next year.

Logan, a two-time first-team all-section selection for the Western PA Big 56, announced on Penn Hills’ athletic Twitter account Aug. 10 her intention to verbally commit to the Bobcats.

During her junior season, Logan finished with .667 batting average, five doubles, two triples, four home runs, 15 RBIs and 29 runs scored for the Indians (5-9, 5-10).

Aside from Ohio, Logan was mulling offers from Robert Morris, Hampton, Bucknell and George Mason. However, Logan received an offer from Ohio in the first couple of days of August and went on a visit Aug. 9.

“The school is very pretty and the town is nice,” Logan said. “I felt at home. I was comfortable with the coaching staff and I could see myself there for four years.”

Logan, who plays AAU for the Ohio Outlaws, knew Ohio was interested when her summer coach was being contacted by the Bobcat staff about their interest in utilizing Logan’s speed in the outfield.

As a two-sport athlete who plays volleyball in the fall, Logan wanted to get the recruitment process out of the way so she can enjoy her senior year.

“It’s important to me so I can just relax and not be stressed out about things. I can just focus on playing,” Logan said.

Logan, who is a team captain, will be one of the outside hitters for the volleyball team this season.

Ohio University, a member of the Mid-American Conference, finished the 2019 season with a 34-21 record including a 12-8 record in MAC action under first-year head coach Kenzie Roark.

The Bobcats season came to a close with a loss to Toledo in the MAC Championship.

In 2018, Ohio was the MAC regular season and tournament champion. The Bobcats made their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2014 and lost to No. 10 Tennessee in the NCAA Regional Tournament.

The chance to play against the top programs in the nation appealed to Logan, who wasn’t concerned about getting playing time early in her collegiate career.

“We didn’t talk about playing time a lot. I know I have to work to play as a freshman in college. It wasn’t a factor. I love to work for things. I love a challenge,” Logan said.

During her freshman year, Logan received honorable mention all-section honors after finishing with a .444 batting average.

In her junior season, Logan took over some of the pitching duties after the graduation of Jasmine Woodings.

Logan will have a bigger role in her final year with the Indians with the graduation of first baseman Makayla Delo, who was a first-team all-section selection.
