High school football roundup for Week Zero: Penn-Trafford holds off Canon-McMillan

Conlan Greene threw for 335 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 42 yards and another score as Class 5A No. 2 Penn-Trafford held off Class 6A No. 5 Canon-McMillan, 35-28, in a nonconference football game Friday night.
Daniel Tarabrella caught nine passes for 140 yards and the game’s first touchdown for the defending PIAA and WPIAL champion Warriors (1-0).
Mike Evans threw for 309 yards and four touchdowns for Canon-McMillan (0-1), which pulled to within seven points with 2:13 left in the fourth quarter. Austyn Winkleblech caught four passes for 150 yards and three touchdowns in the loss.

Avonworth 27, Grove City 7 — In nonconference play, Luke Hilyard ran for 240 yards and four touchdowns to lead Class 3A No. 2 Avonworth (1-0) to victory over Grove City (0-1).
Baldwin 47, Brashear 17 – Andrew Sharp ran for 100 yard and scored four touchdowns, including a 70-yard kickoff return, as Baldwin (1-0) beat Brashear (0-1) in nonconference play.
Beaver Falls 22, Blackhawk 7 — Sy’Mauri scored on an interception return as Class 2A No. 1 Beaver Falls (1-0) defeated Class 4A Blackhawk (0-1).
Bentworth 50, Brownsville 12 — In nonconference play, Vitali Daniels ran for 135 yards and three touchdowns to lead Bentworth (1-0) to the win over Brownsville (0-1).
Brentwood 34, Ellwood City 21 — In nonconference play, Anthony Herisko caught six passes for 101 yards and a 25-yard touchdown from Tavian Miller as Brentwood (1-0) defeated Ellwood City (0-1). Herisko added 37 rushing yards and a touchdown while Miller threw for 183 yards. Chris Smiley tossed for 197 yards and two touchdowns for Ellwood City.
Butler 35, Shaler 28 — Dashawn Cox ran for 157 yards and two touchdowns and caught four passes for 99 yards as Butler (1-0) defeated Shaler (0-1) in nonconference play. Mac Schnur threw for 202 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another TD for Butler. Luke Cignetti rushed for 278 yards and three touchdowns for Shaler.
California 65, Frazier 13 — In nonconference play, California (1-0) downed Frazier (0-1). Spencer Petrucci scored three times, and Zachary Gelete added two scores, including a 44-yard punt return. Jake Layhue also ran for two TDs.
Cameron, W.Va. 41, West Greene 31 — Despite Colin Brady’s 256 rushing yards, West Greene (0-1) fell to Cameron, W.Va. in nonconference play. Brady rushed for three touchdowns and caught a 74-yard scoring pass from Cooper Chambers, who threw for 115 yards. Colson Wichterman and Payton Neely scored two touchdowns each for Cameron.
Canton 31, Union 18 — Canton defeated Union (0-1) in a nonconference contest.
Carrick 14, Carlynton 0 — Zion Frye threw touchdown passes to Rashod Karioki and Shawn Woods as Carrick (1-0) shut out Carlynton (0-1) in a nonconference game. It was Carrick’s first victory since the 2017 season.
Central Valley 43, Trinity 20 — Bret FitzSimmons ran for 108 yards and three touchdowns to lead Class 4A No. 4 Central Valley (1-0) to a nonconference win against Trinity (0-1). Antwon Johnson added 134 passing yards and one touchdown. Jonah Williamson factored in all three of Trinity’s touchdowns —running for two and throwing for another.
Chartiers-Houston 32, Jefferson-Morgan 14 — In nonconference play, Chartiers-Houston (1-0) beat Jefferson-Morgan (0-1).
Connellsville 16, Albert Gallatin 13 — Connellsville (1-0) slipped past Albert Gallatin (0-1) to pick up the nonconference win.
East Allegheny 19, South Park 6 — In nonconference play, Michael Cahill threw for 163 yards and two touchdowns to lead East Allegheny (1-0) to the win over South Park (0-1). Connor Harper threw for 100 yards and one touchdown for South Park.
Elizabeth Forward 33, Ringgold 0 — Zach Boyd caught four passes for 120 yards and a touchdown as Class 3A No. 3 Elizabeth Forward (1-0) shut out Class 4A Ringgold (0-1). Zion White threw for 172 yards and two touchdowns.
Fort Cherry 69, Northgate 20 — In nonconference play, Matt Sieg threw for 237 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 70 yards and two TDs to lead Fort Cherry (1-0) to victory over Northgate (0-1). Nate Heirendt added 111 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Freedom 24, Quaker Valley 12 — Damian Grunnagle ran for 126 yards and Ty Schultheis threw for two touchdowns as Class 2A Freedom (1-0) beat Class 3A Quaker Valley (0-1).
Freeport 28, Indiana 8 — Zach Clark had a touchdown catch and scored on a blocked punt to lead Freeport (1-0) to a nonconference win over Indiana. Ben Lane added a rushing touchdown for the Yellowjackets, who led 15-8 at halftime.
Keystone Oaks 19, Deer Lakes 7 — Clinton Robinson ran for two touchdowns and caught another as Class 2A Keystone Oaks (1-0) beat Class 3A Deer Lakes (0-1). Derek Burk ran for a 32-yard touchdown for Deer Lakes.
Hampton 48, Knoch 0 — Joey Mayer threw for 227 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 96 yards and one touchdown as Class 4A Hampton (1-0) amassed 558 yards of offense in its nonconference shutout over Knoch (0-1). Benny Haselrig caught four passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns while Eric Weeks added three receptions for 104 yards and two TDs.
Laurel 63, New Brighton 7 — Class A Laurel (1-0) scored 21 points in the first, second and fourth quarters as it downed Class A New Brighton (0-1) in a nonconference game. Chase Tinsman threw for 106 yards and one touchdown and ran for 48 yards and three TDs. Laurel’s defense limited New Brighton to 81 total yards.
Laurel Highlands 50, Uniontown 6 — Laurel Highlands (1-0) beat Uniontown (0-1) to claim the nonconference win.
Linsly School, W.Va. 43, Imani Christian 0 — Linsly School, W.Va. blanked Imani Christian (0-1) in nonconference play.
Ligonier Valley 48, Springdale 0 — John Jablunovsky scored on a 52-yard run and a 42-yard punt return as Ligonier Valley (1-0) blanked Springdale (0-1) in nonconference play. Haden Sierocky added two touchdowns—on a 45-yard run and an 85-yard interception return.
Mapletown 42, Avella 0 — In nonconference play, Landon Stevenson ran for 174 yards and three touchdowns to lead Mapletown (1-0) to victory over Avella (0-1).
McGuffey 44, Southmoreland 28 — Kyle Brookman rushed for two touchdowns, caught a TD and returned a kickoff 88 yards for another score to lead Class 2A McGuffey (1-0) to victory over Class 3A Southmoreland (0-1). Philip McCuen threw for 141 yards and two touchdowns for McGuffey while Kadin Keefer tossed for 160 yards and one touchdown in the loss.
McKeesport 40, West Mifflin 0 — Bobbie Boyd rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns to lead McKeesport (1-0) to the nonconference win over West Mifflin (0-1).
Neshannock 45, Sharon 28 — Neshannock (1-0) started its 2022 season by defeating Sharon in nonconference play.
New Castle 49, Summit Academy 0 — Class 4A New Castle (1-0) shut down Class A Summit Academy (0-1).
North Allegheny 41, Allderdice 0 — Logan Kushner threw for 167 yards and three touchdowns to lead Class 6A No. 3 North Allegheny (1-0) to the nonconference shutout against Allderdice (0-1). Tyree Alualu ran for two touchdowns and caught another for the Tigers.
North Catholic 37, Serra Catholic 14 — Jay Siket threw for one touchdown and ran for another as Class 4A No. 5 North Catholic (1-0) defeated Class 2A No. 5 Serra Catholic (0-1).
Peters Township 56, Fox Chapel 0 — Rich Woods ran for 116 yards and four touchdowns as Peters Township (1-0) downed Fox Chapel (0-1) in nonconference play. Chris Cibrone threw for 236 yards and three touchdowns to Brendan McCullough, who had six receptions for 181 yards.
Pickerington North, Ohio 42, Pine-Richland 0 — In nonconference play, Pickerington North, Ohio blanked Class 5A No. 4 Pine-Richland (0-1).
South Fayette 35, Chartiers Valley 0 – Nate Deans ran for a pair of scores and Drew Welhorsky threw for 195 yards and a score and ran for another as Class 5A South Fayette (1-0) shut out Class 4A Chartiers Valley (0-1) in nonconference play.
South Side 40, Hopewell 0 — Brody Almashy threw for 115 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 73 yards and two TDs to lead Class A South Side (1-0) to the shutout against Class 3A Hopewell (0-1). Parker Statler caught three passes for 103 yards and one touchdown.
St. Edward, Ohio 42, Central Catholic 10 — At the Freedom Bowl at Hall of Fame Stadium, Ohio, St. Edward, Ohio downed Class 6A No. 1 Central Catholic (0-1).
Steelton-Highspire 21, Bishop Canevin 14 — Jakhai Noss ran for a 13-yard touchdown, caught a 59-yard scoring pass and returned an interception 82 yards for a TD as Steelton-Highspire defeated Class A No. 1 Bishop Canevin (0-1) at the Chambersburg Peach Bowl Showcase. Xavier Nelson scored on a 50-yard pass from Cross and Marquis Carter ran for a 6-yard touchdown to account for the Crusaders’ points.
Upper St. Clair 42, Norwin 6 — Jamaal Brown rushed for 152 yards and a 65-yard touchdown as Class 5A No. 5 Upper St. Clair (1-0) scored 28 points in the second quarter in its nonconference win at Norwin (0-1). Ty Lagoni returned two interceptions for touchdowns for Upper St. Clair, which forced four turnovers overall. Nicholas Urey threw for 154 yards and Norwin’s lone touchdown.
Washington 54, Monessen 22 — Logan Carlisle threw for 181 yards and two touchdowns and ran 17 yards for another TD to lead Class 2A No. 3 Washington (1-0) to victory over Class A Monessen (0-1). Davoun Fuse added four receptions for 113 yards while Zxavian Willis scored on a 90-yard interception return and a 37-yard run.
West Allegheny 41, Moon 0 — Class 4A West Allegheny (1-0) opened its season by shutting out Class 5A Moon (0-1).
Western Beaver 20, Beaver 7 — Class 2A Western Beaver (1-0) beat Class 3A No. 4 Beaver (0-1) in nonconference play.
Wheeling C.C., W.Va. 24, Ambridge 7 — Ambridge (0-1) fell to Wheeling C.C., W.Va. in a nonconference matchup.
