The Seneca Valley girls soccer program has had the Midas touch over the years.
The Raiders have won five WPIAL girls soccer championships, including title runs 10 years ago in 2013 and five years ago in 2018.
The season is only one game old for this year’s Seneca Valley squad, but the Raiders will be playing for an early season share of first place Wednesday when they host rival Butler at 7:30 p.m.
The Raiders won their season opener Monday over Fox Chapel, 2-1, on second half goals by Karly Majeski and Ashlee Libby.
The Golden Tornado are also off to a good start, with wins over Erie Cathedral Prep and in their section opener Monday over Pine-Richland, 1-0 in overtime on a goal by Leah Deal.
2 other section showdowns
There are two other WPIAL girls soccer games set for Wednesday matching unbeaten section teams with at least a share of first place up for grabs.
In Section 2-3A, Connellsville, Elizabeth Forward, Laurel Highlands and Thomas Jefferson all won their section openers on Monday.
On Wednesday, TJ hosts Connellsville.
Sami Maglicco registered a hat trick in the Jaguars’ win over Belle Vernon while Emma Tikey scored two goals to pace the Falcons in their victory over Ringgold.
In Section 3-A, Eden Christian Academy, Riverside and Freedom all won their section openers Monday.
Freedom visits Riverside on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs used plenty of offense in a win over Sewickley Academy, 6-2, while the Panthers turned to defense in a shutout victory over Mohawk, 1-0.
Perfect on the links
It should be a perfect day to hit the golf course weather-wise in Western Pa. on Wednesday with sunny skies expected and temps in the low 70s.
Ironic since four schools with perfect records in their section will fight for first place as WPIAL boys golf teams hit the midway point of their section schedule.
In Section 4-2A, neighbors Keystone Oaks and Seton LaSalle are undefeated in section play. The Golden Eagles are 4-0 while the Rebels are 3-0.
The two teams meet in a home match for Seton LaSalle at the Mt. Lebanon Golf Course.
In Section 5-2A, both Mohawk and Neshannock are a perfect 5-0 heading into their showdown Wednesday.
The Warriors host the Lancers at the Stonecrest Golf Course.
