The logjam atop WPIAL Section 1-A girls soccer might be clearer after Wednesday’s action on the pitch … or not.
Riverview, Springdale and Greensburg Central Catholic are all tied for the top spot with 5-1 section records. The three are two games in front of both Serra Catholic and Seton LaSalle, who are tied for fourth place with 2-3 records.
On Wednesday, Springdale visits Greensburg Central Catholic while Seton LaSalle hosts Riverview.
In their first meeting this season, the Dynamos blanked the visiting Centurions, 3-0, while the host Raiders routed the Rebels, 8-0.
There is another fight for first place in Class A Wednesday as Charleroi visits Chartiers-Houston.
Both the Cougars and Buccaneers are 6-1 in the section, one game ahead of Waynesburg (5-2).
Charleroi shut out Chartiers-Houston in their first meeting on Aug. 30, 3-0.
Two for four
The top four girls soccer teams in each section qualify for the district postseason next month.
There are teams in a pair of WPIAL sections locked in a fight for fourth place that will collide Wednesday.
In Section 4-3A, Blackhawk sits in fourth place with a 3-3 section record, a half-game ahead of West Allegheny at 3-4.
The Cougars host the Indians looking to avenge their loss at West A last month, 2-1.
In Section 1-2A, Central Valley visits Beaver.
The Warriors are 3-3 in the section while the Bobcats sit at 3-3-1. CV won the first meeting between these Beaver County rivals, 3-1.
Tennis for two
The WPIAL girls tennis doubles sectionals start Wednesday at four sites in Class 3A and five sites in 2A.
The results from the sectionals will determine the qualifiers for the district girls tennis doubles championships next week.
Once the field is determined, the district tennis committee will meet and unveil the brackets Monday. The first three rounds take place Oct. 4 at Bethel Park (3A) and North Allegheny (2A) and the finals and consolations are at NA on Oct. 5.
