High school roundup for Sept. 27, 2023: South Fayette girls soccer scores another statement win

Alexandra Delaney, Abbey Spalla and Emily Sinton scored to lead South Fayette to a 3-0 victory over previously unbeaten Montour in a battle of Section 4-3A contenders Wednesday night.

The win continued a successful run for the Lions (7-5-1, 6-2), who in the last two weeks have earned a win over each of the other three teams currently in a playoff spot in the section, the Spartans (7-1-3, 5-1-1), Moon (8-1-1, 5-1-1) and West Allegheny (7-5, 4-4).

Avonworth 7, Hopewell 0 – Caroline Sweeney scored a hat trick while Megan Obersteiner, Fiona Mahan, Minah Syam and Gianna Babusci each tallied a goal as Avonworth (9-1-2, 7-1) blanked Hopewell (0-10, 0-8) for a Section 1-2A win. Elena Zimmerman kept a clean net for the shutout.

Beaver 2, Central Valley 0 – Sydney Chontos and Lilia Battalini scored and Marina Hahn had two assists as Beaver (6-3-1, 4-3-1) defeated Central Valley (3-7-1, 3-4) in Section 1-2A. Gracie Turyan made two saves for the shutout.

Belle Vernon 1, Laurel Highlands 0 – Grace West scored off an assist from Chessa Maertz and Abby Showman made six saves for the shutout as Belle Vernon (4-6-1, 3-5-1) beat Laurel Highlands (6-5, 5-4) in Section 2-3A.

Beth-Center 4, South Side 1 – Kendall Welsh scored two goals and Alexia Fischer and Hannah Binns added a goal apiece to lead Beth-Center (2-8) to a nonsection win over South Side (0-10).

Charleroi 2, Chartiers-Houston 0 – Bella Carroto scored both goals and Addison Conrad recorded the shutout as Charleroi (10-1, 7-1) grabbed sole possession of first place in Section 2-A with the win over Chartiers-Houston (10-2, 6-2).

Deer Lakes 2, Freeport 0 – Kylie McCoy and Bryanna Simonetti scored to help Deer Lakes upset Freeport in Section 2-2A. Brooke Kostyak recorded the shutout for the Lancers (5-4-2, 3-3). It was the first loss of the season for the Yellowjackets (6-1-1, 4-1-1).

Fox Chapel 9, North Hills 0 – Alyssa Quackenbush had a hat trick for Fox Chapel (7-3-1, 5-3-1) in a Section 1-4A win over North Hills (0-11, 0-9).

Gateway 2, Penn Hills 0 – Becca Ryan and Hayden Price scored to lead Gateway (3-5-1, 3-5) past Penn Hills (2-8, 0-8) in Section 3-3A.

Hampton 2, Indiana 1 – Sara Kenst and Gigi Rudy scored to lift Hampton (8-2, 6-2) to a Section 1-3A victory. Mae Turner scored for Indiana (2-8, 1-6).

Keystone Oaks 10, Brownsville 1 – Becca Simon had a hat trick and Emma Mathiee and Natalie Tortorella scored two goals apiece for Keystone Oaks (8-4, 4-2) in a Section 4-2A win over Brownsville (0-10, 0-6).

Kiski Area 5, Obama Academy 0 – Lila Clouser had two goals and Camryn Kunz, Addison Bell and Addison Buffone also scored for Kiski Area (6-6-1, 4-2-1) in a Section 1-3A win over Obama Academy (0-9, 0-7).

Mars 6, Armstrong 0 – Brynn Ramsey scored two goals and had two assists, Rosie Pellegrino and Addi Girdwood each had a goal and an assist and Maeve O’Leary and Meredith Ashbaugh also scored as Mars (10-0, 8-0) cruised to a Section 1-3A win against Armstrong (4-8, 2-6).

Mt. Pleasant 16, East Allegheny 0 – Emma Hatcher recorded a hat trick and Riley Gesinski, Morgan Gesinski and Maggie Piper each scored two goals as Mt. Pleasant (9-2, 6-0) rolled to a Section 3-2A win over East Allegheny (2-6, 1-5). Anna Welsh, Jaden Kantorik, Brooke Ulery, Carly Kapr, Cassidy Cole, Rylin Bugosh and Emerson Moore also scored for the Vikings.

North Allegheny 1, Pine-Richland 0 – Abigail Stager scored the winning goal and Natalie Rak recorded the shutout as North Allegheny (12-0, 9-0) stayed undefeated with a Section 1-4A win over Pine-Richland (3-7, 3-5).

North Catholic 9, Ambridge 2 – Simone Sharpless netted four goals and Lily Karsman, Makenzie DeBlassio, Lauren Mealie, Carli Rivetti and Mikaela Canzian also scored for North Catholic (8-2, 7-1) in a Section 1-2A win over Ambridge (1-7, 1-7).

Norwin 9, Hempfield 0 – Nicole Bown had a hat trick, Camryn Reed scored twice, and Mila Ostovich and Rebecca Kostrobala combined on the shutout as Norwin (3-8, 3-6) beat Hempfield (1-10, 0-9) in Section 2-4A. Evelyn Moore, Jackie Webber, Chloe Reeder and Cady Pensenstadler also scored.

Peters Township 2, Bethel Park 1 – Julia Spergel and Ella Neupaver scored to power Peters Township (10-0-1, 8-0-1) past Bethel Park (5-5-1, 4-5) in Section 2-4A.

Plum 3, Greensburg Salem 0 – Gianna Revetta, Ava Weleski and Emily Grubich scored for Plum (9-0-1, 8-0) in a Section 3-3A win over Greensburg Salem (2-9-1, 1-7). McKenna Anderson and Malayna Smith combined on the shutout.

Riverview 4, Seton LaSalle 2 – Lola Abraham scored all four goals for Riverview (9-1, 6-1) in a Section 1-A win. Sydney Towers and Anna Porter scored for Seton LaSalle (4-5, 2-4).

Seneca Valley 4, Butler 1 – Ayla Ward, Lexi Shattahi, Karly Majeski and Adidson Shank scored to lead Seneca Valley (8-1-1, 6-1-1) past Butler (7-5, 5-4) in Section 1-4A.

Serra Catholic 8, Jeannette 0 – Lydia Reith had a hat trick and Lexie Genes added two goals for Serra Catholic (4-3, 3-3) in a Section 1-A win over Jeannette (0-8-1, 0-7). Charlotte Childs, Bianca Gajodas and Milena Poziviak also scored.

South Allegheny 4, Monessen 1 – Rylee Stetz scored a hat trick and Ava Ellwood added a tally for South Allegheny (8-3, 4-3) in a Section 2-A win over Monessen (3-7-1, 1-6-1). Regan Cribbins scored for the Greyhounds.

South Park 6, West Mifflin 0 – Brooke Paylo scored a hat trick, Alicia Riberich buried a pair of goals and Emily Mihelcic added another as South Park (8-3, 6-0) shut out West Mifflin (5-5, 2-4) in Section 4-2A.

Southmoreland 4, Woodland Hills 3 – Lizzy Boone, Mylee Street, Megan Mehall and Aubrey Seder scored to lead Southmoreland (6-3, 5-1) past Woodland Hills (4-4, 3-3) in Section 3-2A.

Thomas Jefferson 2, Connellsville 0 – Katie Sukal and Sami Maglicco scored to help Thomas Jefferson (10-1, 9-0) get past Connellsville (7-5, 6-3) in Section 2-3A.

Upper St. Clair 5, Baldwin 0 – Ellie Shantholzer had a pair of goals to lead Upper St. Clair (11-1, 8-1) to a Section 2-4A win over Baldwin (3-8, 1-8).

Waynesburg 4, Bentworth 0 – Ella Miller scored two goals and Kaley Rohanna and Rylei Rastoka added a goal apiece to lead Waynesburg (8-2, 6-2) to a Section 2-A win over Bentworth (4-6-1, 2-5-1).

West Allegheny 2, Blackhawk 1 – Kiley Holtz and Ella Smith scored to push West Allegheny (7-5, 4-4) past Blackhawk (5-6, 3-4) in a Section 4-3A win.

Yough 4, Ligonier Valley 0 – Brooke Wieland scored twice and Kate Slavick and Carli Reisinger each added a goal for Yough (4-8, 3-3) in a Section 3-2A shutout of Ligonier Valley (0-12, 0-6).

Girls volleyball

Albert Gallatin 3, Laurel Highlands 2 – Leah Myers had 10 kills, five blocks and 10 digs to lead Albert Gallatin to a Section 3-3A win. Mia Myers had nine kills, eight digs and 17 assists and Jocelyn Ellsworth added eight digs and 16 assists.

Beaver 3, Mohawk 0 – Chloe List had 10 kills and 13 digs, Kailyn Connelly added 10 kills, and Zoe Ringer had 34 assists as Beaver swept Mohawk in Section 1-2A. Aubrey Bumblis had 19 digs, Anna Vinopal had five aces and Jaedyn Brown had 10 kills and two aces for the Bobcats.

Girls tennis

Section 1-3A – It will be an all-Franklin Regional section final with top seed Ellen Liu and Michelle Yan taking on second seed Lucy Zheng and Makinzie Marcus on Thursday. Liu and Yan defeated Carlin Burkovac and Maria Fetter of Latrobe, 6-1, 6-0, in the semifinals, and Zheng and Marcus beat Ambur and Aubrie Orowitz of Kiski Area, 6-2, 6-2.The top four finishers advance to the WPIAL tournament in Class 3A.

Section 2-3A – A pair of teams from Chartiers Valley will square off Thursday for the section doubles title. Top-seeded Elle Wilshire and Mari Wilshire reached the finals with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Elli-Anne Laing and Nicole Camargo of South Park. Third-seeded Milla Konakchieva and Maddie Cioccio beat Kaitlyn Mattas and Ava Grisetti of South Park in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-2.

Section 3-3A – Top-seeded Elana Sobol and Rachel Nath of Shady Side Academy and second-seeded Abby Santora and Mollie Sclichter of Oakland Catholic reached the section doubles finals with straight-set wins in the semis. Solbol and Nath beat Gabrielle Modor and Olivia Garofalo of Baldwin, 6-1, 6-2, and Santora and Sclichter defeated Sienna Siegel and Anna Kintner of Fox Chapel, 6-2, 6-4.

Section 4-3A – Katie Peterson and Emma Smith knocked off defending WPIAL champs Sophia Cunningham and Sylvie Eriksen of Mt. Lebanon to set up an all-Bethel Park final. Peterson and Smith knocked off Cunningham and Eriksen in a three-set thriller, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. They will meet Cami Fisher and Lily Sierka, who defeated Mt. Lebanon’s Jacquelyn Tang and Elena Tatel, 6-2, 6-1.

Section 1-2A – Fifth-seeded Tess and Eve Kusneski knocked off the top seed to set up an all-Indiana section doubles final. The Kusneskis beat Sasha Hoffman and Stella Bossert of Greensburg Central Catholic in a tight semifinal, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 7-6 (6). They will meet second-seeded Anna Buterbaugh and Kaye Lehman, who defeated Amelia Miller and Beatrix Pawlikowsky of Southmoreland in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-2. The top three finishers advance to the WPIAL tournament in Class 2A.

Section 4-2A – Top seeds Anna Mrkonja and Mia Woodske of Beaver and second seeds Rachel Hardek and Sara Miloszewski of Central Valley knocked off teams from host Blackhawk to reach the section finals. Mrkonja and Woodske topped fourth-seeded Marissa Butcher and Lily Ceriani, 6-0, 7-5, and Hardek and Miloszewski knocked off the 11th-seeded team of Lyric Knepshield and Skye Lanham, 6-2, 6-4.

Section 5-2A – The top seeded team of Peja Cruise and Raven Karlik of Montour cruised into the section finals with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Julia Samarin and Ivy Hostutler of host Keystone Oaks. They’ll meet second-seeded Livia Jobbins and Hannah Stein of Quaker Valley, who defeated Marann Buckanovich and Elen Clark of Winchester Thurston in the semis, 6-2, 6-2.
