Players to watch: Jayson Ireland, Burrell; Owen Clouse, Redbank Valley
Throw-ins: Burrell reached the PIAA playoffs after beating No. 4 Seton LaSalle, 1-0, in the WPIAL’s third-place consolation game last week. Landisville Hempfield (15-4-2) at Fox Chapel (13-4-2)
5 p.m. Tuesday, Burk Stadium, Fox Chapel
Winner plays: Winner of 1-2 Conestoga (18-3) vs. 3-2 Manheim Township (18-2) Saturday in quarterfinals (site/time TBD)
Players to Watch: Kate Friday, Fox Chapel; Kat Morgan, Landisville Hempfield
Throw-ins: Fox Chapel enters the PIAA playoffs with a great deal of momentum after recording a third straight WPIAL playoff upset. The Foxes took down No. 1 North Allegheny, 1-0, in overtime Thursday at Highmark Stadium for the program’s first WPIAL title since 1985. Friday, a senior and a top goal scorer for the Foxes all season, netted the winner 35 seconds into OT off an assist from Alyssa Quackenbush. The single goal was a change from Fox Chapel’s offensive output in the first two rounds as it tallied five goals against both No. 3 Peters Township and No. 2 Upper St. Clair. The Foxes are averaging 3.6 goals and have given up 19 goals in 19 games. Fox Chapel is in the PIAA playoffs for the first time since 2016, when it suffered a 1-0 loss to Norwin in the first round. … Landisville Hempfield qualified for the state tournament by making the semifinals of the District 3 playoffs. The Black Knights are one of four District 3 teams to make it to the PIAA tournament. They suffered a 2-0 loss to runner-up Manheim Township in the semifinals. It was the fourth meeting between the teams this season. Hempfield played the semifinal game without a key forward and defender because of injuries. The Black Knights are in the PIAA playoffs for the first time since 2019, when they won the District 3 title and advanced to the state semifinals before being eliminated.
