North Allegheny notebook: Mack Leftwich a Broyles Award nominee

North Allegheny graduate Mack Leftwich has been nominated for the 2023 Broyles Award, which honors the top assistant coach in college football.

Leftwich is in his first season as the Texas State offensive coordinator.

The Bobcats have the best offense in the Sun Belt Conference, averaging 34.9 points, which is 21st in the nation, and 463.1 yards per game, good for 13th nationwide.

Leftwich also has coached at UIW and Lehman High School in Texas and was a student assistant at UTEP, where he played from 2013-15.

As a senior at North Allegheny in 2012, Leftwich threw for 3,331 yards and 45 touchdowns to lead the Tigers to a state title. He was named the state’s Class AAAA player of the year and earned all-state honors.

He is one of 57 nominees for the award. Semifinalists will be named Nov. 21 and finalists on Nov. 28. The winner will be revealed on Dec. 5.

Tigers girls soccer falls in PIAA semifinals

Kate Kemmerley and Isabelle Allred scored in a six-minute span of the second half to lead District 1 runner-up Conestoga (21-3) to a 2-0 win over WPIAL runner-up North Allegheny in the PIAA Class 4A girls soccer semifinals Nov. 14, at Chambersburg.

North Allegheny capped its season with a 22-2 record.

It was the final game for seniors Sam Braden, Jadyn Coy, Libby Earley, Natalie Figura, Abby Lang, Natalie Rak, Ally Ruiz, Abigail Stager and Gracie Strzempek.

NA volleyball reaches PIAA final

North Allegheny’s girls volleyball team advanced to the PIAA Class 4A championship match for the seventh straight season after beating Landisville Hempfield, 3-2, in the PIAA semifinals Nov. 14, at Hollidaysburg.

The Tigers (19-1) won a five-set thriller over Hempfield (20-1), the District 3 champions, 26-24, 21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-9.

Senior Marin Dunaway had 23 kills to lead the Tigers. Freshman Alicia Mokube had seven blocks. Setter Molly Robertson had 23 assists and 11 kills. Jamie Frisco added 11 kills, and senior Avery Butcher had 23 digs.

North Allegheny was to meet District 1 champion Unionville in the PIAA finals Nov. 19.

Tigers boys soccer falls in quarterfinals

North Allegheny’s boys soccer season came to a close in the PIAA Class 4A quarterfinals Nov. 11 after a 2-0 loss to Central Bucs South at Chambersburg.

Dante Accamando made three saves in defeat for the Tigers, who finished the season 17-3-3.

Hockey team blanks Big Macs

Ryan Jackman had two goals and an assist and Evan Kerber added a goal and an assist to lead North Allegheny (6-1) to a 4-0 victory over Canon-McMillan in a Class 3A ice hockey game Nov. 14.

Andrew Long had a 17-save shutout.

Runners sign letters of intent

Three senior members of the North Allegheny cross country teams signed letters of intent to continue their careers in college.

Eva Kynaston signed with Penn State, Erin McGoey committed to Delaware and Michael Gauntner will run at Slippery Rock.

Kynaston and McGoey were part of the girls’ team’s WPIAL and PIAA championships. They finished third and fifth, respectively, at the WPIAL Class 3A championships. They were second and 18th at the PIAA meet.

Gauntner took fifth at the WPIAL meet and 37th at states.

Field hockey players earn postseason honors

Four North Allegheny field hockey players were selected to the Class 3A All-WPIAL team.

Senior forward Isla Abrams, junior midfielder Mia Brinkley, junior goalie Kayla Joyce and freshman forward Addison Burns were recognized after helping the Tigers finish as the WPIAL runners-up.

Abrams had 20 goals, Brinkley scored 13, and Burns had 12. Joyce had 311 saves and six shutouts.
