What to watch for in WPIAL sports on Jan. 10, 2024: Top-ranked girls basketball teams collide

Two top-ranked girls basketball teams highlight a light night of WPIAL basketball action Wednesday.
Oakland Catholic is undefeated this season with a 12-0 record.
What makes that run even more impressive is that 10 of its first 12 games have been on the road.
That will change beginning Wednesday.
The Eagles will finally enjoy some home cooking as they prepare to play their next four games and eight of their final 10 on their own floor.
Class 5A No. 1 Oakland Catholic on Wednesday welcomes the top-ranked team in 2A, Greensburg Central Catholic.
The Centurions are 7-3 this season and had a five-game winning streak snapped in their most recent outing on Saturday, a 16-point loss to 4A power North Catholic.
Powers collide
Wednesday marks another busy evening on the mats with plenty of WPIAL wrestling duals.
Two district Class 3A powers meet with first place in Section 4-3A up for grabs when Connellsville takes on Latrobe.
Two years ago, these two met in the WPIAL team semifinals, with the Falcons getting revenge from a regular season loss by beating the Wildcats, 38-19.
Connellsville then fell to Waynesburg in the finals.
A year ago, Connellsville edged Latrobe in a regular season match, 31-30, thus claiming the Section 4 crown.
The host Wildcats are 4-2 overall, but 2-0 in section matches, while the Falcons are 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the section.
Three-way dance
With only a few weeks left in the district team wrestling regular season, three teams are deadlocked in the fight for first place in Section 5-3A, with two of them battling Wednesday.
Both Trinity and host South Fayette are 2-0 in the section as they prepare to square off. The Hillers are 5-0 this season while the Lions check in with an overall record of 5-3.
The two are tied for first with West Allegheny. The Indians visit Chartiers Valley.
Next Wednesday, West Allegheny will host Trinity and then conclude the regular season in two weeks when it visits South Fayette.
