High school roundup for Feb. 2, 2024: North Allegheny rallies past Butler to give coach his 500th win

Joe Dopirak and Ty Iwanonkiw scored 17 points apiece to lead North Allegheny to a 70-63 victory over Butler in Section 1-6A boys basketball Friday night, giving Tigers coach Dave DeGregorio his 500th career win.

Anthony Sciote added 14 points for North Allegheny (8-11, 6-2), which trailed by seven entering the final quarter. Donovan Carney led Butler (15-3, 5-2) with 19 points while Ayden Davis added 17 and Braylon Littlejohn 14.

Allderdice 105, Westinghouse 33 – Logan Golle scored 31 points and Azerick Jetter added 20 to lead six players in double figures for Allderdice (16-3, 8-0) in a City League win. Trey Schachter had 12, Pavle Slepcev 11 and Ma’ayan Kohai and Matt Kossis 10. Terrell Wofford led Westinghouse (1-11, 1-7) with 14.

Baldwin 58, Norwin 32 – Nathan Wesling and Caden Cherico each tallied 16 points as Baldwin (15-4, 6-2) beat Norwin (7-11, 1-7) in Section 2-6A.

Belle Vernon 75, Laurel Highlands 56 – Zion Moore put up 19 points, Trevor Kovatch added 15 and Alonzo Wade finished with 10 as Belle Vernon (11-5, 6-2) beat Laurel Highlands (2-18, 0-8) in Section 3-4A. Jaden Ringer and Aiden Black each scored 14 for the Mustangs.

Bethel Park 74, Connellsville 49 – Shawn Davis scored 18 points as Bethel Park (11-8, 6-2) beat Connellsville (2-17, 1-7) in Section 1-5A. Tanner Pfeuffer added 16 points for Bethel Park while Paul Digbeu chipped in 12 points. Geno Farrell and Anthony Piasecki scored 10 points each for Connellsville.

Bishop Canevin 57, Propel Braddock Hills 37 – Raukeem Hawkins scored 18 points to lead Bishop Canevin (9-8, 6-0) to the Section 2-2A win against Propel Braddock Hills (5-13, 0-6). Michael Vaughan chipped in 14 points for the Crusaders while Jackson Maddix tallied 11 points.

Blackhawk 92, Ambridge 82 – Justin Shanor buried five 3-pointers, finishing with 29 points, and pulled in 13 rebounds to lead Blackhawk (6-14, 3-7) to a Section 2-4A win against Ambridge (6-14, 3-7). Tyler Heckathorn had a double-double with 28 points and 15 rebounds and Hayden Jones added 12 points for the Cougars.

Brashear 63, Carrick 60 – Titus Gillett led all scorers with 26 points, Nasir Pullie added 13 and Karmello Harshey had 11 as Brashear (7-9, 4-3) squeezed by Carrick (7-11, 3-5) in the City League. Brayden Fisher put up 21 points, Kelenn Ward scored 17 and Ray Saunders chipped in 11 for the Raiders.

Burgettstown 59, Bentworth 44 – Zack Shrockman tied his career high with 31 points and Carson Tkalcevic had 19 as Burgettstown (15-5, 8-2) prevailed over Bentworth (3-15, 2-9) in Section 4-2A. Ben Hays dropped 25 points for the Bearcats.

California 51, Jefferson-Morgan 47 – In Section 2-A, Jacob Ziolecki scored 18 points and Vinny Manzella added 17 as California (6-13, 5-3) overcame a nine-point deficit entering the fourth quarter to beat Jefferson-Morgan (12-8, 4-4). John Woodward had 12 points for Jefferson-Morgan while Houston Guesman added 11.

Canon-McMillan 45, Hempfield 44 – Eamon O’Donoghue produced 15 points as Canon-McMillan (9-10, 4-4) edged out Hempfield (4-16, 0-8) in Section 2-6A. Max Williams led the Spartans with 17.

Chartiers-Houston 86, Fort Cherry 68 – Avery Molek (22), Jack Lochran (21), Nate Gregory (15), Paul Williamson (14) and Justus Buckingham (12) all scored in double figures in a Section 4-2A win for Chartiers-Houston (15-5, 8-3). Shane Cornali scored 22 points, Derek Errett followed with 19 and Blake Sweder added 14 for Fort Cherry (14-5, 9-1).

Cornell 63, Avella 53 – Julian Cordice led all scorers with 27 points and Eduardo Benitez racked up 15 in a victory for Cornell (6-12, 2-6) in Section 1-A. Bryce Wright scored 14 points, Westley Burchianti had a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds and Nate Cilia had 12 points for Avella (9-11, 4-4).

Deer Lakes 78, Apollo-Ridge 23 – Collin Rodgers and Billy Schaeffer each scored 16 points and Wayne Love added 11 for Deer Lakes (16-2, 10-0) in a Section 3-3A defeat of Apollo-Ridge (2-19, 0-11).

Elizabeth Forward 75, Albert Gallatin 71 – Charlie Meehleib’s 22 points led Elizabeth Forward (12-6, 4-3) to the Section 3-4A win over Albert Gallatin (7-9, 3-5). Isaiah Turner and Daniel Spence added 13 points each for Elizabeth Forward while Tyler Basic scored 11 points. Blake White recorded a game-high 29 points for Albert Gallatin while Shymere Wilson added 16.

Fox Chapel 61, Armstrong 36 – Jefferson Moorefield-Brown led all scorers with 16 points as Fox Chapel (11-9, 6-2) beat Armstrong (10-10, 2-6) in Section 2-5A. Jacob Szep had 11 for the River Hawks.

Frazier 42, Carmichaels 34 – Dalian McManus led all scorers with 16 points as Frazier (10-10, 5-5) defeated Carmichaels (4-14, 1-9) in Section 4-2A. Aydan Adamson scored 11 points for the Mighty Mikes.

Geibel 62, Mapletown 58 (OT) – Gary Tarbuck sank four 3-pointers and had 24 points, Tommy Kolencik followed with 22 and Mike Miller finished with 10 to lead Geibel (1-19, 1-7) over Mapletown (2-15, 1-7) in Section 2-A. Jeremiah Mick notched 16 points and Braden McIntire added 14 for the Maples.

Hampton 66, Freeport 42 – Peter Kramer dropped 24 points to boost Hampton (15-3, 7-0) past Freeport (5-13, 2-6) in Section 1-4A. Liam Mignogna had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Talbots. Gavin Glista scored 16 points for the Yellowjackets.

Highlands 70, Greensburg Salem 50 – Cam Reigard sank four 3-pointers, finished with 18 points and hit the 1,000-point mark for his career for Highlands (12-6, 5-3) in a Section 1-4A victory. Bradyn Foster added 17, Ali Shareef finished with 11 and Jordyn Tavarez had 10 for the Golden Rams. Ryan Burkart scored 18 points and AJ Tarpley chipped in 14 for Greensburg Salem (3-16, 1-7).

Jeannette 39, Clairton 36 – Kymone Brown hit for 15 points and Jayce Powell chipped in 12 as Jeannette (12-6, 7-2) edged out Clairton (10-11, 6-5) to clinch a playoff spot in Section 3-2A. Taris Wooding scored 10 points for the Bears.

Lincoln Park 82, Hopewell 56 – Brandin Cummings led all scorers with 29 points and Meleek Thomas put up 21 as Lincoln Park (15-3, 9-0) cruised to a Section 2-4A win. Zach Kovell scored 23 points and Mason Showrank added 13 for Hopewell (7-13, 1-10).

Mohawk 67, Riverside 36 – Bobby Fadden’s 17 points led Mohawk (14-6, 10-0) to its 11th straight win with the Section 1-3A victory over Riverside (7-13, 3-7). Jay Wrona added 12 points, Mason Hopper 11 points and J.J. Nail 10 points for Mohawk. Will Sullivan led Riverside with 13 points.

Monessen 66, West Greene 55 – Lorenzo Gardner tallied 30 points to lead Monessen (15-3, 7-1) to the Section 2-A win. Rodney Johnson added 12 points for Monessen. Lane Allison paced West Greene (11-7, 6-2) with 21 points while Matt Wassul contributed 15 and Parker Burns scored 11.

Montour 71, East Allegheny 29 – Jake Wolfe dropped 22 points and Ama Sow tallied 20 as Montour (16-3, 7-1) rolled to a Section 4-4A win over East Allegheny (3-16, 0-8).

Moon 60, Chartiers Valley 36 – Elijah Guillory and Michaels Santicola scored 18 points apiece and Aiden Reesman produced 15 to lead Moon (16-3, 8-0) to a Section 4-5A win. Jayden Davis scored 18 for Chartiers Valley (10-10, 3-5).

Neshannock 80, New Brighton 22 – David Kwiat dropped 22 points, Anthony Bonner tallied 11, and Jaxon Mozzocio and LJ Keith scored 10 apiece as Neshannock (16-3, 9-2) rolled to a Section 1-3A win. Brian Taylor had eight points for New Brighton (2-15, 0-9).

New Castle 54, Central Catholic 48 – Ralphie Blundo scored 20 points and Damian Harrison added 19 as New Castle (13-7, 2-6) claimed the Section 1-6A victory. Enzo Khalil scored a game-high 21 points for Central Catholic (11-8, 6-2).

North Catholic 73, Central Valley 46 – Max Hurray netted 18 points and Wills Kontul added 13 for North Catholic (12-6, 8-2) in a Section 2-4A. Tanner Stevenson made four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points for Central Valley (12-6, 5-4).

North Hills 71, West Allegheny 61 – Zach Pollaro dropped 32 points, Eric James scored 17 and Logan Johnson finished with 13 in a Section 4-5A win for North Hills (10-8, 4-4). Brady Miller put up 20, Brandon Bell added 13, Justin Manns followed with 12 and Josiah Jonson had 10 for West Allegheny (11-9, 0-8).

OLSH 70, South Park 60 – Tiernan McCullough dropped 25 points, Lucca Grisafi scored 11 and Gino Williams followed with 10 for OLSH (15-4, 9-1) in a Section 2-3A victory. Cooper Hochondoner scored 22 points and Luke Scarff put up 20 for South Park (11-8, 5-5).

Penn-Trafford 57, McKeesport 44 – Tyler Freas scored 18 points and Evan Gross drained five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points to lead Penn-Trafford (10-10, 4-4) to a Section 3-5A win over McKeesport (5-11, 1-7). Lamont Perkins had 13 points and Keith Spell added 10 for the Tigers.

Pine-Richland 54, Seneca Valley 44 – In Section 1-6A, Vasilos Balouris scored 15 points to lead Pine-Richland (7-11, 3-5) to an overtime win against Seneca Valley (6-14, 2-6). Andrew Mendelovich added 12 points for Pine-Richland while Tyler Pepin scored 23 points for Seneca Valley.

Propel Andrew Street 60, Propel Montour 43 – In nonsection play, Ahmir Calhoun and Christian Terry each scored 12 points in Propel Andrew Street’s win over Propel Montour (4-13). Maurice Lowry and Trayvon Walker added 11 points for Propel Andrew Street (8-5). John Anderson and Jaiden Williams tallied 15 and 13 points, respectively, in the loss.

Rochester 54, Carlynton 40 – Xavier Rigby led all scorers with 30 points and Jayvin Hemer produced 13 as Rochester (13-5, 7-1) beat Carlynton (4-14, 3-5) in Section 1-A. Lekhi Turner and Mark Jameson each scored nine for the Cougars.

Serra Catholic 65, Riverview 60 – Isiah Petty put up 29 points and Pete Burke finished with 19 to lead Serra Catholic (12-6, 6-4) to a Section 3-2A win. Nate Sprajcar scored 19 points, Alex Schultheis followed with 15, Jalen Rickets added 11 and Drew Ogrodowski produced 10 for Riverview (6-12, 1-9).

Seton LaSalle 53, Brentwood 43 – Hayden Merchant put up 25 points and Patrick Weldon racked up 15 for Seton LaSalle (15-4, 10-0) in a Section 2-3A win over Brentwood (5-15, 3-8). Forrest Betz had 17 for the Spartans.

Shady Side Academy 91, Ligonier Valley 33 – Seamus Riordan led all scorers with 26 points, Eli Teslovich dropped 20 and Ryan Frohlich added 11 as Shady Side Academy (12-6, 8-2) coasted to a Section 3-3A victory. Brian Wisniewski scored 13 points and Michael Wisniewski made four 3s and finished with 12 points for Ligonier Valley (4-15, 3-8).

Shaler 52, Penn Hills 38 – Keegan Smetanka scored 18 points as Shaler (18-2, 7-1) shut out Penn Hills (11-7, 4-4) in the third quarter to claim the Section 2-5A win. Kaden Orga and Brandon London scored 10 points each for Shaler, which trailed by six at halftime before outscoring Penn Hills in the second half, 32-12. Darien Roberson scored 10 points for Penn Hills.

South Allegheny 78, West Mifflin 51 – Cam Epps and Mike Michalski scored 20 points each as South Allegheny (13-6, 4-4) beat West Mifflin (9-9, 2-6) in Section 4-4A. Shane Rudberg chipped in 12 points for South Allegheny. David Fleming led West Mifflin with 15 points while Daven Reynolds added 12.

South Fayette 52, Mars 34 – Michael Plasko led all scorers with 24 points and Gavin Orosz netted 14 for South Fayette (11-8, 5-3) in a Section 4-5A win. Will Wilson and Ryan Ceh scored 10 points apiece for Mars (10-10, 4-4).

Springdale 61, Leechburg 31 – Mason Gent scored 19 points to lead Springdale (14-6, 5-5) to the Section 3-2A win. John Hughes added 15 points for Springdale while Jayden Floyd led Leechburg (2-17, 0-10) with 15 points.

Sto-Rox 54, Steel Valley 28 – Robert Sykes Jr. scored 13 points and David Johnson followed with 12 to lead Sto-Rox (9-10, 5-5) to a Section 2-3A win. Nate Yuhas had 11 and Nahjir Norris added 10 for Steel Valley (0-19, 0-11).

Thomas Jefferson 56, Trinity 41 – Evan Berger scored 22 points while Noah Prosser added 18 as Thomas Jefferson (15-3, 7-0) recorded the Section 1-5A win. Jacob Dunkle scored 20 points for Trinity (8-11, 3-5).

Uniontown 78, Southmoreland 56 – Calvin Winfrey scored 20 points and Jamire Braxton added 17 as Uniontown (16-3, 7-1) picked up the Section 3-4A win against Southmoreland (14-6, 3-5). Notorious Grooms contributed 13 points for Uniontown while K’Adrian McLee chipped in 12 points. Southmoreland’s Noah Felentzer led all scorers with 23 points.

Winchester Thurston 40, Nazareth Prep 31 – In Section 2-2A, Matt Southers had 15 points to lead Winchester Thurston (9-7, 3-3) to the Section 2-2A win against Nazareth Prep (5-10, 1-6). Michael Hammerling added 11 for Winchester Thurston while Anthony Pipkin contributed 10. Will Evans recorded 14 points in the loss.

Woodland Hills 63, Plum 47 – Amere Brown scored 20 points, Scoop Smith added 12 and Landon Akins contributed 10 for Woodland Hills (8-11, 5-3) in a Section 2-5A win. Max Grice led Plum (6-13, 0-8) with 16 points.

Girls basketball

Armstrong 39, Hampton 31 – Emma Paul scored 15 points to lead Armstrong (16-4, 9-2) to the Section 2-5A victory over Hampton. The win marked 11 straight for Armstrong. Meghan Murray paced Hampton (11-8, 6-4) with 12 points.

Baldwin 52, Canon-McMillan 48 – Getting 13 points from Katie Lucarelli and 11 from Mary Vargo, Baldwin (9-11, 2-9) picked up a Section 2-6A win. Nadia Davis scored a game-high 25 points for Canon-McMillan (10-9, 3-7) while Lauren Borella chipped in 12.

Brashear 44, Carrick 17 – Ra’Niya Morris scored 18 points to power Brashear (9-9, 3-5) to a City League win. Kaliyah Hairston led Carrick (5-12, 1-7) with nine.

Charleroi 69, West Greene 46 – Charleroi senior McKenna DeUnger, who is injured and otherwise out for the season, scored the Cougars’ first two baskets to reach 1,000 points for her career in a nonsection win for Charleroi (9-10). Bella Carroto scored 21 points, Ella Sypolt added 17 and Riley Jones had 12 for the Cougars. Kendra Tharp scored 16 points and Madelyn Roberts added nine for West Greene (7-13).

Nazareth Prep 34, Leechburg 33 – Laurai Jones had 15 points while Cashmere Ralph added 14 as Nazareth Prep rallied to defeat Leechburg (8-8) in nonsection play. Nazareth Prep trailed by five heading into the fourth quarter. Adalyn Zanotto led Leechburg with 14 points.

North Allegheny 58, Butler 53 – Lydia Betz led all scorers with 23 points, Caroline Henderson had 13 and Grace Heliger added 11 to lift North Allegheny (17-2, 6-2) past Butler (4-15, 1-7) in Section 1-6A. Amelia McMichael put up 19 and Sydney Patterson chipped in 13 for the Golden Tornado.

Penn Hills 47, Plum 44 – Egypt Moore-Coleman hit the go-ahead basket on a putback with 30 seconds left to lead Penn Hills (9-10, 6-5) past Plum (12-7, 9-1) in Section 1-5A.
