Plum outduels Freeport for girls regional bowling title

Plum and Freeport, the dominant teams at the Western PA Regional girls team bowling championships over the last four years, did battle for the title in a tightly contested championship match Saturday at AMF Noble Manor Lanes.

The Mustangs came away with the crown, winning their second consecutive girls singles championship and third overall. Before Plum’s two-year run, Freeport won the previous two girls team titles.

Freeport won Game 1 in the best-of-three final match Saturday, 163-127, before Plum came roaring back with a 200-196 win in the second game and a 224-205 victory in the third.

Plum’s Addison Then (224) and Jordyn Osche (214) had two highest scores in qualifying. They were joined on the all-tournament team by Hempfield’s Amelia Droste, Kiski Area’s Veronica Flanagan and Apollo-Ridge’s Mia Ament.

Plum was the top team in qualifying with a 3,619 total. They were followed by McDowell (3,395), Freeport (3,382), Deer Lakes (3,289), Norwin (3,238) and Hempfield (3,147).

The quarterfinals were two-game sweeps. Freeport beat Hempfield, 199-151 and 146-138. Deer Lakes topped Norwin, 138-115 and 160-153.

The semifinals were dramatic as both finalists were beaten in Game 1.

Freeport lost 199-139 to McDowell before rallying for victories by scores of 191-153 and 223-186.

Plum fell 191-167 in the first game before fighting back with wins by scores of 162-156 and 190-167.

The state tournament is set for Friday and Saturday at Leisure Lanes in Lancaster.
