Will Siegel didn’t have a hard time protecting his seed at the WPIAL Section 3-3A boys tennis singles championship.

The top-seeded Fox Chapel senior won the section title by beating Shady Side Academy’s Sai Chaudhry, 6-3, 6-1. On the way to the finals, Siegel beat Shaler’s Liam Creagh and Shady Side Academy’s Chase Hartman.

Fox Chapel’s Charlie Larsen made the semifinals before losing to Chaudhry. Siegel and Chaundry went on to lose in the first round of the WPIAL tournament.

Monteverde impresses

Patrick Monteverde is trying to complete a climb to Major League Baseball.

While pitching for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in Triple-A ball, the Fox Chapel graduate is showing that he may not be too far from a call to the majors. Monteverde has made two starts this season for the Miami Marlins affiliate and is 2-0.

Monteverde has recorded 12 strikeouts in 10 innings. He was drafted in the eighth round in 2021. Monteverde is 17-10 overall during his career and has a 3.64 ERA. He has struck out 271 batters in 257 innings pitched.

Stacking wins

Kennedy Murton scored a team-high four goals to help Fox Chapel girls lacrosse beat Freeport, 20-6, to improve to 5-1 on the season. The Foxes also had four other players — Caroline Grimsle, Meg Delaney, Annie Mohn and Caroline Leland — score three goals for Fox Chapel.

Heating up

Fox Chapel baseball responded well to losing its first section game. The Foxes rolled up four straight section wins to moved into a tie for first place with Penn-Trafford. Three of Fox Chapel’s four wins during that stretch were shutouts.

On track

Fox Chapel softball had a rough start to the season. The Foxes didn’t have many games to play because of the weather, but after a 0-2 start, they have found their footing. Fox Chapel is 3-3 overall and 2-1 in Section 1-5A after picking up back-to-back wins over Penn Hills and Oakland Catholic.

Fox Chapel’s lone section loss was its opener against defending PIAA Class 5A runner-up Shaler.
