North Allegheny, Sewickley Academy earn No. 1 seeds for WPIAL boys team tennis tournament

North Allegheny and Sewickley Academy drew No. 1 seeds for the WPIAL boys team tennis tournament when brackets were released Thursday.

North Allegheny (12-0) was seeded first in Class 3A ahead of No. 2 Gateway (9-0), No. 3 Upper St. Clair (10-1) and No. 4 Fox Chapel (9-1). Gateway defeated North Allegheny, 3-2, in last year’s finals.

In Class 2A, top-seeded Sewickley Academy (10-0) is the defending WPIAL champion. North Catholic (9-0) earned the second seed followed by No. 3 Winchester Thurston (7-0) and No. 4 South Park (7-1).

Sewickley Academy defeated Winchester Thurston, 4-1, in last year’s finals.

There are 18 teams in the Class 3A bracket and 15 in 2A. The tournament starts Monday and ends May 8 with finals at Washington & Jefferson.

Also qualifying in 3A were Allderdice, Bethel Park, Butler, Franklin Regional, Mars, Moon, Mt. Lebanon, North Hills, Norwin, Penn-Trafford, Peters Township, Pine-Richland, Shady Side Academy and Shaler.

The 2A field includes Blackhawk, Burrell, Central Valley, Chartiers Valley, Hampton, Indiana, Montour, Mt. Pleasant, Quaker Valley, Ringgold and Valley.
