Westmoreland high school sports notebook: GCC’s Crosby gets Buffalo’s attention

Samir Crosby has his third Division I scholarship offer for football.

The Greensburg Central Catholic sophomore playmaker added Buffalo to his list, which also includes UNLV and Miami of Ohio.

Crosby (5-foot-10, 175 pounds) played a variety of positions last season for GCC, including receiver, running back, quarterback and defensive back.

Crosby rushed for 634 yards, caught 31 passes for 623 yards and scored a team-best 20 touchdowns last season. He also made 107 tackles and pulled in six interceptions.

No way

Ligonier Valley senior softball pitcher Cheyenne Piper signed a letter of intent to play at Westminster on Thursday morning.

Come the evening, under threatening skies on her home field, she closed out the regular season with a no-hitter.

Piper struck out 16 and did not issue a walk as the Rams blanked Indiana, 7-0.

Big 5/6 honors

The Big 5/6 Conference, which covers the top two classifications in WPIAL sports, released its all-section softball teams.

Local first-team picks from the lone Class 6A section were Norwin senior shortstop Bailey Snowberger, Norwin senior utility player Brooklyn Kotch, Hempfield sophomore third baseman Lauren Howard, Hempfield senior outfielder Maggie Howard and Hempfield junior shortstop Allie Cervola.

Section 2-5A first-team selections were Penn-Trafford junior third baseman Cam Ponko, Penn-Trafford junior outfielder Giuliana Youngo, Penn-Trafford senior catcher Mack Keenan, Penn-Trafford sophomore DH Allison Pokrant, Franklin Regional junior shortstop Toryn Fulton, Franklin Regional sophomore outfielder Adrianna Martz, Franklin Regional junior catcher Ciara Camacho and Latrobe senior pitcher Kayla Williams.

For baseball, local first-team picks for Section 2-6A were senior infielder Carson Shuglie, senior outfielder Ethan Minerva and sophomore pitcher Chase Sikorski of Hempfield and Norwin senior infielder Keegan Carr.

The Section 1-5A first team included sophomore infielder Luke Williams, junior pitcher NJ Ramchandran, senior DH Darren DeRiggi and senior utility Max Bernadowski of Franklin Regional; and junior infielder Brayden Stone, senior pitcher Brandon Roher and senior catcher Ian Temple of Penn-Trafford.

Lou Cortazzo of Penn-Trafford was the section coach of the year.

Moe soccer games

For the first time, the Moe Rosensteel Kickoff Classic soccer showcase will feature a boys matchup.

The four-game event will be Aug. 24 at Ringgold’s Joe Montana Stadium in Monongahela.

There will be three girls games: Thomas Jefferson vs. Franklin Regional, Hickory vs. Ringgold and Avonworth vs. Latrobe. That will be followed by the Elizabeth Forward and Ringgold boys.

Times have not been announced.

Lacrosse milestone

Hempfield couldn’t rally to get past Butler in girls lacrosse, but the Spartans’ Rylie Fordyce still reached a milestone.

Fordyce, a senior goaltender, made her 100th career save.
