The Pine-Richland girls lacrosse team got a step closer to defending its WPIAL Class 3A title with a 17-7 win over Canon-McMillan in the quarterfinals May 15.

Cate Gentile had five goals and six assists in the win over the Big Macs. Madeline Mill added four goals and two assists, Mallory Boivin finished with a hat trick and two assists, and Kendyll Jerry contributed a pair of goals.

Claire Dosch made seven saves in goal for the Rams.

Like the girls team, the Rams boys lacrosse team won its first playoff game, and did so against the same school, topping Canon-McMillan, 18-5 on May 13.

The Rams advanced to play rival North Allegheny in the quarterfinals.

P-R softball falls

Pine-Richland’s softball season came to an end May 15 with a 3-1 loss to Norwin in the first round of the WPIAL Class 6A playoffs. Calle Henne had an RBI single for the Rams in the bottom of the sixth.

Pine-Richland finished the season 11-10 and fell one game short of reaching the WPIAL semifinals for a third straight season.

Henne, a catcher, and outfielder Jocelyn Langer were named to the Big 56 conference first team.

Outfielder Serafina Julio and designated hitter Izzy Sulesky received second-team honors and third baseman Mackenzie Gillis was an honorable mention.

P-R baseball honors

Fresh off a third consecutive section title, the Rams were well-represented on the Big 56 All-Section baseball team with 12 players making the cut.

Jake Waddell (infield), Anthony Mengine (outfield), Keegan Deihl (pitcher), Sam Heckert (designated hitter) and Peyton Ford (utility) made the Section 1-6A first team.

Rams coach Kurt Wolfe was named Coach of the Year.

Reese Rupert (pitcher) is on the second team and Anthony Annichine (infield), Tanner Cunningham (infield), Danny Pedersen (infield), Logan Plummer (outfield) and Tristan Farrar (pitcher) are honorable mentions.

Pine-Richland is the No. 2 seed in the WPIAL Class 6A tournament and was set to begin play May 20 in the quarterfinals against Central Catholic.

Rams make college choices

A trio of baseball players — Chase Caricato (Penn State Behrend), Tyler Vogel (Baldwin Wallace) and Tommy Zimmerman (South Carolina-Lancaster) — took part in the spring national signing day May 3 at Pine-Richland.

Talan Hill-Ressler (Westminster boys lacrosse) and Khushi Saini (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute field hockey) also signed with their respective colleges to continue their athletic careers.
