Woodland Hills speedster Scoop Smith is looking to make a difference in his junior season for the Wolverines.

Smith is coming off an explosive sophomore season in which he totaled 44 catches for 851 yards and 11 rushes for 94 yards with 17 total touchdowns.

Smith also won the 100-meter dash at the WPIAL track and field championships in 10.64 seconds.

While his speed and talent will go a long way in how the Wolverines perform this season, his leadership will also be a key component.

“I feel like I am a natural born leader. I have always been a leader since I was younger,” Smith said. “The first thing my mom and dad taught me was to have some heart, and I am a hard worker. I like to win.”

Smith traveled to West Virginia University last Thursday for his first camp of the offseason, after he was slowed by a pulled hamstring.

“I really have been looking forward to this camp. West Virginia has been showing a lot of love (in recruiting),” Smith said. “Hopefully I can show my talents and come home with some great news.”

Smith holds Division I offers from Nebraska, UNLV, Toledo, Temple, Robert Morris and UMass.

Schools are attracted to his Swiss Army knife talent and his ability to line up in any scheme or formation and impact the game. Smith also has a strong awareness for cutback lanes with elusive speed.

Smith’s main goal this season is to get the Wolverines back to the playoffs. Woodland Hills’ season ended with a 26-21 loss to conference champion Penn Hills in the regular-season finale last fall. Woodland Hills was without starting quarterback Cam Walter, who was sidelined because of injury.

“The goal is to have a better season from last year,” Smith said. “We didn’t make the playoffs last year, so the big thing is we just want to win. We know what the main goal is: we want to win a championship, but we are trying to get better by the day and it starts with Week Zero.”

Smith said another goal for the Wolverines this year is to be different.

“We are too talented to not make the playoffs like last year. We are all healthy, we have Cam Walter back, and we want to make history,” Smith said. “No Woodland Hills team has ever won states. We’re just trying to start something new.”
