High school roundup for Sept. 12, 2024: West Allegheny hands 1st loss to Chartiers Valley

Aaron Bouch had a goal and an assist to lead West Allegheny to a 4-0 victory over Chartiers Valley (4-1, 3-1) in a matchup of top teams in Section 4-3A boys soccer Thursday. Anthony Mimna added a goal and Zach Wallace and Mack Santoro combined on the shutout for West A (3-4, 2-2).

Allderdice 6, Uniontown 0 – Adian Thomas scored a hat trick, Jacek Piekut had a goal and an assist, Ben Pinkston and Luke Pena each scored a goal and Luca Fuerte had two assists as Allderdice (4-1-1, 2-0-1) blanked Uniontown (1-4, 0-4) in Section 3-3A.

Avonworth 5, Hopewell 1 – Nathan Kline and Abdul Basit scored two goals apiece, Abdul Wahab also scored and Cody Cwynar had three assists to lead Avonworth (5-1, 5-0) past Hopewell (1-3, 1-3) in Section 2-2A.

Bentworth 12, California 0 – Andrew Vipperman and Ryan Moessner each recorded a hat trick and Dillan Colbert added a pair of goals as Bentworth (7-0, 3-0) rolled to a Section 2-1A win over California (0-3, 0-2). Aiden McMurray, Billy Moyer, Adam Moessner and Caden Hackison each netted a goal for the Bearcats.

Beth-Center 9, Chartiers-Houston 0 – Nekoda Bundy recorded a hat trick, Parker Amos had two goals and four assists and Reiner King and Rylan Piper scored two goals apiece as Beth-Center (4-1-1, 1-1) cruised to a Section 2-A win over Chartiers-Houston (1-7, 1-2). Goalkeepers Luke Amon and Jason Zellie combined on the shutout.

Bethel Park 1, Trinity 0 – Xavier Jackson scored the winning goal and Jacob Coffield and Luke Rubican combined on the shutout to lift Bethel Park (4-2, 4-1) past Trinity (3-2-2, 3-1-1) in Section 2-3A.

Elizabeth Forward 5, Steel Valley 0 – Aidan Davis had a pair of goals, Luca Valerio, Ethan Childers and Luke Holdren also scored, and Matt Johnston recorded the shutout as Elizabeth Forward (4-2-1, 4-0-1) defeated Steel Valley (2-4, 2-3) in Section 3-2A.

Carlynton 8, Bishop Canevin 2 – Hamza Alezzo had five goals and an assist to lead Carlynton (6-2, 3-0) past Bishop Canevin (1-6, 0-3) in Section 3-A. Angels Hernandez scored twice and Mateo Carrasco had a goal and two assists for the Cougars.

Charleroi 8, Yough 2 – Dylan Klinger and Blake Pendo each scored a hat trick while Otis Mac and Matthew Odoski each netted a goal as Charleroi (5-0, 4-0) beat Yough (1-2-1, 1-2-1) in Section 4-2A.

Freeport 1, Highlands 1 – Angelo Porco scored for Freeport (4-1-2, 2-1-2) and Brady Chelko scored for Highlands (3-2-1, 2-2-1) as the Section 1-2A rivals played to a draw.

Greensburg Salem 2, Derry 1 – Tommy Shrum and Benny Kimmel each scored a goal and Everett Redinger had two assists as Greensburg Salem (1-6, 1-4) defeated Derry (2-5, 1-3) in Section 4-2A.

Indiana 2, Kiski Area 0 – Tim Birch scored the game-winning goal as Indiana (7-1, 4-1) defeated Kiski Area (0-6, 0-5) in Section 1-3A.

Moon 4, Montour 0 – Marc Haupt scored a pair of goals and Aedan Costa and Evan Thomas added a goal each as Moon (7-0, 3-0) defeated Montour (6-1, 4-0) in Section 4-3A.

Mt. Lebanon 3, Canon-McMillan 2 (OT) – Ben Bowen scored the overtime winner and Will Healy and Benton Thompson also had goals for Mt. Lebanon (4-4, 1-2) in a Section 2-4A win over Canon-McMillan (3-2-1, 1-2).

Mt. Pleasant 5, Waynesburg 0 – Grant Zahrobsky and Lukas Showman each had a goal and an assist while Bryson Bankosh, Jarett Garn and Tyler Kurtz each tallied a goal as Mt. Pleasant (6-1, 5-0) blanked Waynesburg (0-5, 0-4) in Section 4-2A. Bryce Gamble contributed two assists while Grayson Gardner and Austnin Duvall combined on the shutout for the Vikings.

Norwin 6, Gateway 0 – Daniel Maddock had two goals and an assist and Logan Plichta added a goal and two assists to lead Norwin (4-3, 3-0) past Gateway (2-4, 1-2) in Section 1-4A. Tristan Josephic had a goal and an assist and Dylan Moyer and Tanner Johnson also scored for the Knights.

OLSH 4, Serra Catholic 0 – Andre Koloucouris had a pair of goals and Owen Miner and Aaron Callahan also scored to lift OLSH (5-0, 3-0) past Serra Catholic (1-7, 1-2) in Section 3-A.

Peters Township 8, Connellsville 0 – Jeven Kelly and Brett Martin scored two goals each while Alex Parise, Dante Pusateri, Grant Woodward and Gabe Marino each chipped in a goal as Peters Township (5-1-1, 3-0) shut out Connellsville (2-6, 0-3) in Section 2-4A.

Plum 5, Penn Hills 0 – Five players scored goals and Brady McLaughlin and Chase Eber combined on the shutout as Plum (5-0-2, 3-0) blanked Penn Hills (1-6, 0-3) in Section 1-4A. Goal scorers for the Mustangs were Fedgi Aristyl, Bryce Bobich, Luke Hoburg, Christian Alter and Marshall Capizza.

Seneca Valley 2, Pine-Richland 0 – Tyler Kuhar and Owen Eastgate scored for Seneca Valley (6-2, 2-1) in a Section 3-4A win over Pine-Richland (3-4, 1-2).

South Fayette 5, Albert Gallatin 0 – Luke Gillen, Lucas Patel, Tyler Feltz, Dylan Davis and Alex Renk each found the back of the net as South Fayette (3-3, 3-2) shut out Albert Gallatin (0-5, 0-5) in Section 2-3A.

Southmoreland 4, Brownsville 0 – Jack Smith scored twice while Ethan Kenney and Hunter Ryan each added a goal to lead Southmoreland (5-2, 3-1) to a Section 4-2A win against Brownsville (1-4-1, 1-3-1). Trent Nelson kept a clean net for the Scotties.

Springdale 1, Riverview 0 – Colton Gent scored the lone goal and Springdale (5-0, 3-0) edged Riverview (0-4, 0-3) in Section 4-A. Matthew Lawrence assisted on the goal. Noah Skaugen recorded the shutout in net for the Dynamos, who haven’t been scored on this season.

Thomas Jefferson 1, Ringgold 1 – Jake Shoemaker converted a penalty kick for Thomas Jefferson (4-0-2, 3-0-2) and Izaiah Wilson scored for Ringgold (4-0-2, 3-0-2) as top teams in Section 2-3A played to a draw.

West Mifflin 2, Belle Vernon 1 – Greyson Black scored the game-winning goal as West Mifflin (1-5, 1-4) picked up a Section 3-3A victory. Trevor Kovatch scored for Belle Vernon (3-3, 1-3).

Girls soccer

Allderdice 5, Penn Hills 0 – Madie Schneider had a hat trick, Avery Ruffus and Shira Levy also scored, and Hallie Cohen and Emma Daley combined on the shutout to lead Allderdice (3-4) to a nonsection win over Penn Hills (1-4-1).

Beaver 3, South Park 1 – Ana Hahn scored a pair of goals and Alaina Mollura added another and had an assist as Beaver (5-0) defeated South Park (4-4) in nonsection play.

North Star 7, Ligonier Valley 0 – Baylee Sleek scored a hat trick and Kylee Lepley and Maleah Barnick each added two goals apiece as North Star (4-4) shutout Ligonier Valley (1-4) in a nonsection match.

Volleyball

Beaver 3, New Castle 0 – Kailyn Connelly had 15 kills, Lanie Malobabich added seven kills, Zoe Ringer directed the attack with 20 assists and Allie Williams had six aces for Beaver (4-3, 2-0) in a three-set sweep of New Castle (0-3, 0-2) in Section 4-3A.

Carmichaels 3, Mapletown 0 – Ashton Batis had 11 digs and Avery Voithofer added 11 digs and 12 assists for Carmichaels (4-3, 2-0) in a Section 3-A win. Treslee Weston had 14 digs and Marley Seward added 12 digs for Mapletown (0-3, 0-2).

Canon-McMillan 3, Peters Township 1 – Natalie Carr produced 19 kills and 20 digs, Cali Dagen added 17 kills and 11 digs, while Abby Tucker had 15 kills and Sophia Powell added 16 digs as Canon-McMillan (5-0, 2-0) beat Peters Township (5-1, 1-1) in Section 1-4A. Brooke Peters had 35 assists and Carsen Brown chipped in with 25 assists for the Big Macs.

Hampton 3, Valley 0 – Marin Katona-Bock had a team-high 12 kills and Lilly Muczinski recorded 22 assists, seven aces and five digs to lead Hampton to a Section 2-3A win. Payton Galietti led the Talbots with seven digs.

Hempfield 3, Penn-Trafford 2 – Jillian Sowers had 21 digs and Kennedy Nelson and Lauren Howard both followed with 20 digs apiece as Hempfield (3-2, 2-0) won a five-set match against Penn-Trafford (2-4, 1-1) in Section 3-4A. Preslee Horchak had 33 assists and Sadie Kuhns added 15 kills for the Spartans.

Jefferson-Morgan 3, Avella 0 – Emilee Bazzoli had 12 digs, Alisa Long followed with 10 digs, Isabelle Bazzoli produced 10 kills and Alaina McCollum had 12 assists as Jefferson-Morgan (3-4, 1-1) swept Avella (0-4, 0-2) in Section 3-A.

Laurel Highlands 3, Albert Gallatin 1 – Leah Myers had 10 kills and Mia Myers added 16 assists for Albert Gallatin (1-4, 1-3) in a Section 3-3A loss to Laurel Highlands (5-0, 3-0).

Mars 3, Highlands 0 – Cecilia Christy had a team-high 11 kills and Gabi Weidemann handed out 19 assists to lead Mars to a Section 2-3A win. Ella Nicotra, Lily Javor and Rylee Wooldridge each had five kills and Kate Southwell contributed five aces and three kills for the Fightin’ Planets.

St. Joseph 3, Leechburg 1 – Kate Giannetta had six kills and 18 service points and Kenzie Jones also recorded six kills to lead St. Joseph to a Section 1-A win. Added four kills and Sofia Quattrocchi had 14 service points for the Spartans.

Field hockey

Latrobe 2, Upper St. Clair 1 – Julia Macey scored in the fourth quarter to tie the game and Sara Blossey scored the game-winner in overtime for Latrobe (1-3, 1-3) in a Class 2A win over Upper St. Clair (0-4, 0-3).

Peters Township 2, Penn-Trafford 1 – Serafina Forlini scored a pair of goals to lead Peters Township to a Class 2A win. Brooke Bauer scored for Penn-Trafford.

Pine-Richland 8, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Georgia Rottinghaus scored a hat trick to lead Pine-Richland (7-0, 4-0) to a shutout victory over Mt. Lebanon (5-1, 3-1) in Class 3A.

Girls tennis

Section 1-3A – Penn-Trafford junior Mia Williams won her third straight section title, defeating Franklin Regional’s Michelle Yan in the finals, 6-1, 6-1, at Franklin Regional. Latrobe’s Carlin Bukovac defeated Norwin freshman Bayleigh Vilage in straight sets in the third-place match. In Class 3A, the top four finishers advance to the WPIAL tournament Sept. 18-19.

Section 2-3A – A Pine-Richland freshman won the section title for the second straight season as top-seeded Cassandra Lapina defeated North Hills’ Elinor Kim in the finals, 6-3, 6-3. North Allegheny’s Mia Kaufman defeated Moon’s Kiera Wise in three sets for third place. Pine-Richland’s Caroline Prisk won the section title last year.

Section 3-3A – Defending WPIAL champion Meriwether McCargo won an all-Shady Side Academy final, beating teammate Brooke Henderson, 6-3, 6-2. In a third-place match pitting Fox Chapel teammates, Sienna Siegel defeated Anna Kintner in straight sets.

Section 4-3A – A pair of Bethel Park sophomores swept Mt. Lebanon opponents in the championship and third-place matches. Top-seeded Cami Fisher defeated Jackie Tang in the finals, 6-4, 6-0, and Mackenzie Smock took third place when Michelle Yang retired after the first set.

Section 1-2A – Greensburg Central Catholic senior Sasha Hoffman won her third section singles title without dropping a game in four matches. In the finals, she defeated Derry senior Paige King, the third seed, 6-0, 6-0. The third-place match was a battle of Mt. Pleasant teammates with Bella Furman defeating Ryleigh Drzal, 6-3, 6-0. In Class 2A, the top three finishers advance to the WPIAL tournament Sept. 18-19.

Section 2-2A – Defending WPIAL champion Gabriella Dusi of Belle Vernon won the section title without dropping a game in four matches. She defeated Oakland Catholic’s Mollie Sclichter in the finals. South Park’s Grace Kempton beat Oakland Catholic’s Luciana Easley in straight sets in the third-place match.

Section 3-2A – Hampton’s Grace Stitt earned the section title by defeating North Catholic’s Brea Kelley 6-3, 7-6 in the championship match. Delaney Kelly, Brea’s sister, rebounded from dropping the first set to defeat Indiana’s Eve Kuzneski 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 in the consolation match.

Section 4-2A – Anna Mrkonja of Beaver topped Neshannock’s Maddie Arrow 6-2, 6-1 in the section championship match. Lincoln Park’s Bella Colatriano earned a three-set win over Blackhawk’s Lilly Ceriani, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 to take third place.
