Here’s a look at the don’t-miss matchups for Westmoreland County in Week 6 of the 2024 season:

Class 5A Big East Conference

Kiski Area (1-5, 0-3) at Latrobe (4-2, 1-2)

7 p.m. Friday, Latrobe Memorial Stadium, Latrobe

Last week’s result: Franklin Regional 35, Kiski Area 30; Woodland Hills 30, Latrobe 20

Last year’s meeting: Did not play

Led by quarterback Carson Heinle, Kiski Area gave first-place Franklin Regional all it could take last week. Heinle was 16 of 27 for 209 yards and two touchdowns and became the school’s all-time leading passer with 3,753 yards. He also ran for a score, and Andrew Finney and Aven Shirley caught scoring throws. … Latrobe dropped its second conference game of the season, again struggling to sustain and finish drives. The Wildcats did have a safety, and quarterback John Wetzel ran for two touchdowns, and Roman Agostoni kicked a 38-yard field goal. Wetzel ran 34 times for 218 yards. Latrobe has given up the fewest points in the conference (79).

Penn-Trafford (4-2, 1-1) at Gateway (3-3, 2-1)

7 p.m. Friday, Pete Antimarino Stadium, Monroeville

Last week’s result: Penn-Trafford 34, Plum 10; Gateway 48, Armstrong 20

Last year’s meeting: Gateway 31, Penn-Trafford 27

Who will get to ring the bell at the annual Battle for the Victory Bell game? Gateway has won the previous two meetings and leads the all-time series 13-11. … Penn-Trafford running back Tasso Whipple is 88 yards shy of rushing for 1,000. Wide receiver Jack Weishaar has 22 catches for 277 yards, and Whipple has 12 catches for 209. … Gateway running back Amari Gans has scored 10 touchdowns. He has rushed for 403 yards and has 14 catches for 218 yards. Wide receiver Shawn Moorefield has 33 catches for 541 yards and three scores. Quarterbacks Elvis Koutsakis (57 of 94 for 760 yards) and Elsidro Bryant (40 of 72 for 652 yards) are splitting time.

Class 4A Big Six Conference

Chartiers Valley (3-2, 1-0) at Belle Vernon (1-3, 0-1)

7 p.m. Friday, James Weir Stadium, Belle Vernon

Last week’s result: Chartiers Valley 42, Laurel Highlands 14; Thomas Jefferson 42, Belle Vernon 14

Last year’s meeting: Did not play

Chartiers Valley used a 26-point third quarter, highlighted by a kickoff return of 98 yards by Julius Best and a defensive score, to rally and defeat Laurel Highlands. Running back Tayshawn Lewis rushed for 188 yards and scored on a 54-yard run. Quarterback Luke Miranda scored on a 10-yard run and threw a touchdown pass. … Belle Vernon dropped its third consecutive game, falling to Thomas Jefferson. Kole Doppelheuer had two catches (45 and 92 yards), and both went for touchdowns. Quarterback Curtis Wade completed 7 of 19 passes for 188 yards.

Class 3A Interstate Conference

Elizabeth Forward (3-3, 1-0) at Derry (3-3, 0-1)

7 p.m. Friday, Trojans Stadium, Derry

Last week’s result: Elizabeth Forward 49, Greensburg Salem 17; Southmoreland 31, Derry 14

Last year’s meeting: Did not play

Perennially strong Elizabeth Forward evened its overall record and began conference play on a high note as Ryan Messina went 18 of 26 for 236 yards and three touchdowns, and Charlie Nigut ran for three scores. … Derry stumbled at Southmoreland to snap a two-game winning streak. Justin Papuga and Max Doherty ran for touchdowns in the loss.

Mt. Pleasant (3-3, 1-0) at Greensburg Salem (4-2, 0-1)

7 p.m. Friday, Offutt Field, Greensburg

Last week’s result: Mt. Pleasant 22, Yough 19; Elizabeth Forward 49, Greensburg Salem 17

Last year’s meeting: Mt. Pleasant 38, Greensburg Salem 7

Another close finish saw Mt. Pleasant score in the closing seconds to edge Yough. Steve Predajna had a 1-yard run with 14 seconds left. Running back Jarett Garn made a highlight-reel touchdown catch over three defenders and made ESPN SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays. The Vikings used a 15-play drive to set up the winning score. Cole Chatfield threw for 174 yards. … Greensburg Salem will play its fifth home game of the season as it looks for a bounce-back win after a solid start to the season. Brody Chismar ran and threw for a score last week.

Yough (2-4, 0-1) at Southmoreland (5-1, 1-0)

7 p.m. Friday, Russ Grimm Field, Alverton

Last week’s result: Mt. Pleasant 22, Yough 19; Southmoreland 31, Derry 14

Last year’s meeting: Did not play

Yough rallied to take the lead late in the fourth quarter but could not stop Mt. Pleasant’s final drive and dropped its fourth in a row after a 2-0 start. Quarterback Raidon Kuroda had a career game, throwing for 235 yards and rushing for 84. Ryan Sever had seven receptions for 96 yards and a score. … Southmoreland continued to soar offensively as freshman quarterback Anthony Smith completed 16 of 25 passes for 296 yards and four touchdowns, and Elliot Premus pulled in seven catches for 155 yards and two scores. Jackson Mickens and Stanley Betters also caught TD passes, and Jake Kaylor booted a 33-yard field goal. The Scotties are averaging 37.6 points.

Class A Black Hills Conference

No. 5 Monessen (5-1, 1-1) at Chartiers-Houston (3-3, 1-2)

7 p.m. Friday, Buccaneer Stadium, Houston

Last week’s result: Monessen 32, South Side 17; Bishop Canevin 70, Chartiers-Houston 0

Last year’s meeting: Did not play

The Greyhounds bounced back nicely from a tough loss to Fort Cherry to upset South Side in a nonconference game. The Greyhounds used their big-play ability to rally for the win. JayVeon Jeffries and Tavian Taylor scored twice each, and TyVaughn Kershaw returned a kickoff 96 yards for a score. … The Bucs were overwhelmed by a talented Bishop Canevin squad. Dom Andreolli rushed for 51 yards against the Crusaders.

Class A Eastern Conference

Jeannette (4-2, 1-2) at Greensburg Central Catholic (3-2, 2-1)

7 p.m. Friday, Centurion Stadium, Carbon

Last week’s result: Clairton 43, Jeannette 0; Greensburg Central Catholic 45, Riverview 14

Last year’s meeting: Greensburg Central Catholic 42, Jeannette 24

Jeannette was blanked by Clairton and the Bears’ vaunted defense, producing just 38 yards of offense and two first downs. The Jayhawks have dropped two in a row after winning their first four. They have not defeated GCC since 2020. Kymon’e Brown and Markus McGowan have shared time at quarterback, and Jayce Powell is a big-play receiving threat. … GCC made it two straight victories with a strong win over Riverview. Jerry Davis had a rushing touchdown, passing touchdown and a 35-yard field goal, and Landon Honick pulled in a pair of scoring passes, one from Jackson McMullen and the other from Samir Crosby, who also ran for a score. Crosby is from Jeannette.

Nonconference

Franklin Regional (5-1) at Fox Chapel (1-4)

7 p.m. Friday, Burke Stadium, Fox Chapel

Last week’s result: Franklin Regional 35, Kiski Area 30; Pine-Richland 71, Fox Chapel 0

Last year’s meeting: Did not play

Franklin Regional rallied from a 17-0 deficit to edge Kiski Area last week. Quarterback Chase Lemke completed 6 of 8 passes for 167 yards and three touchdowns. Kyle Dupill rushed for 217 yards and a score. … Fox Chapel had a tough game against top-ranked Pine-Richland. The Foxes were had minus-77 yards of total offense. … Franklin Regional holds a 11-9-1 lead in the all-time series with a scoreless tie coming in 1985. The series dates to 1980.

Ligonier Valley (2-4) at Charleroi (1-5)

7 p.m. Friday, Myron Pottios Stadium, Charleroi

Last week’s result: South Allegheny 49, Ligonier Valley 28; Charleroi 17, Sto-Rox 6

Last year’s meeting: Did not play

This is the first meeting between the schools. … Ligonier Valley has lost its past two conference games. The Rams’ offense had trouble staying with South Allegheny. John Jablunovsky rushed for 93 yards and three scores, and Mark Jablunovsky caught a touchdown pass. … Charleroi ended a 14-game regular-season losing streak in a win against Sto-Rox. Noah Pletcher had a three-touchdown game against Bentworth. Quarterback Jason Keranko has thrown for 773 yards and nine touchdowns. Pletcher is his top receiver, but the Rams should not overlook Dan Nusida.
