High school roundup for Oct. 12, 2024: Western Beaver beats Mohawk in MAC showdown

Jaivin Peel threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns and added a 35-yard touchdown run to lead Western Beaver to a 47-20 win over Mohawk in the Class 2A Midwestern Athletic Conference on Saturday.

Wyatt Sparbanie had touchdown runs of 69 and 76 yards and Chris Kirkland scored on an 11-yard catch and a 42-yard fumble return for Western Beaver (5-2, 4-1). Bobby Fadden threw for 153 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 73 yards and another score for Mohawk (4-3, 3-2).

Northgate 49, Summit Academy 12 – Anthony Hopkins caught two passes – both for touchdowns – for 37 yards and had two interceptions, returning one for a TD, as Northgate (3-5, 1-4) beat Summit Academy (1-6, 0-4) in the Class A Big 7 Conference. Sonteon Layne threw for 150 yards and three touchdowns and added a rushing touchdown for Northgate, which led 28-0 after the first quarter. Jayson Applewhite threw for 114 yards and a touchdown for Summit Academy.

Boys soccer

Beaver 2, Eden Christian 0 – Jake Peluso and Anthony Furda scored to lead Beaver (9-7-1) to a nonsection win over Eden Christian (8-6-2). Anthony Mrkonja and Joey Pruszenski recorded assists.

Beaver County Christian 1, Blackhawk 0 – Rocco DeSarbo scored the winning goal, assisted by Robert McMahan, as Beaver County Christian (13-3) picked up a nonsection win over Blackhawk (0-11-1).

Canon-McMillan 4, Ringgold 0 – Adam Kuchera had a hat trick and Gabe Fegely also scored to lead Canon-McMillan (10-4-2) to the nonsection win against Ringgold (9-6-1).

Freeport 9, Valley 0 – Angelo Porco scored four goals and Judah Thompson recorded the shutout as Freeport (8-7-2, 5-6-2) defeated Valley (1-16, 1-12) in Section 1-2A.

Hampton 1, North Catholic 0 – Mason Hall scored in overtime off an assist from Braden Cox as Hampton (10-3-3) beat North Catholic (13-4) in a nonsection game. Gavin Guinn recorded the shutout.

Neshannock 2, Hickory 0 – Zayden Herb and Nick Bender had a goal and an assist each as Neshannock (9-5-2) shut out Hickory in a nonsection game.

Penn-Trafford 6, Kiski Area 0 – J.J. Porter scored a hat trick to lead Penn-Trafford (8-5-1, 5-4) to the nonsection win against Kiski Area (0-17, 0-12).

Mars 2, Pine-Richland 2 – Frank Kenzovich and Miles David scored for Mars (12-1-4) and Landon Russel and Finn Kichi scored for Pine-Richland (6-9-1) in a nonsection draw.

Plum 3, Fox Chapel 1 – Zack Carnahan, Andy Strasser and Christian Alter scored as Plum (15-0-3) finished the regular season unbeaten with a nonsection win over Fox Chapel (9-4-1).

Seton LaSalle 4, South Allegheny 0 – In Section 3-2A, Darius Norkevicus, Tyler Kovalcik, Jack Lyons and Cody Brown scored and goalkeeper Charlie Kicinski recorded the shutout as Seton LaSalle (11-4, 10-3) defeated South Allegheny (3-13, 2-11).

Thomas Jefferson 5, Baldwin 1 – Jake Shoemaker and Logan Barron each had a pair of goals and Brayden Miller also scored to lead Thomas Jefferson (10-1-3) to a nonsection win. Anthony DiCesaro scored for Baldwin (3-11-1).

Girls soccer

Beaver 8, McGuffey 0 – Sydney Chontos had three goals and two assists while Lilia Battalini added three goals as Beaver (12-1) shut out McGuffey (7-6-1) in nonsection play. Mia Furda contributed one goal and two assists; Ana Hahn one goal and one assist and Emerson Connelly two assists for Beaver.

Deer Lakes 2, Brookville 1 – Tessa Hollibaugh had both goals for Deer Lakes (12-3-2) in its nonsection win against Brookville.

Moon 2 , Shaler 0 – Rylie Layette and Lilly Snyder scored goals and Lauren Muhanna and Kendall Dydek collected assists as Moon (12-2) blanked Shaler (7-8-1) in nonsection play.

Plum 6, Burrell 1 – Gianna Revetta had two goals and two assists and Emily Grubich also scored twice for Plum (14-1) in a nonsection victory. Ali Joyce had a goal and an assist and Olivia Bigger also scored for the Mustangs. Eva Wilson scored for Burrell (11-4-1).

Girls volleyball

State College tournament – Canon-McMillan brought home some hardware from Centre County, defeating Southern Lehigh, 2-1, in the championship match, Hempfield (Landisville), 2-0, in the semifinals and Meadville, 1-0, in the quarterfinals. The Big Macs went 6-2 in pool play.

Girls tennis

Oakland Catholic 5, Greensburg Central Catholic 0 – The teams of Naho Fukasaku/Zoe Cunicelli and Sarah Rivers/Sarah Bertocchi dropped a total of two games in their doubles matches to lead Oakland Catholic to a nonsection sweep. Mollie Sclichter, Luci Easly and Maddie Johnson won singles matches in straight sets.
