Mt. Lebanon, North Catholic, Quaker Valley advance at PIAA team tennis tournament

Mt. Lebanon, North Catholic and Quaker Valley are still alive their quests to win state team tennis titles.

All three won quarterfinal matches in the PIAA playoffs Friday in Hershey to move on to Saturday’s semifinals.

In Class 2A, WPIAL champ North Catholic (19-1) defeated District 3 runner-up Lancaster Country Day, 4-1. Evelyn Marche at No. 3 singles and the doubles teams of Katie Hardy and Jessica Sinclair and Ava Conley and Macaria Stall won matches for North Catholic, which will meet District 1 champ Lower Moreland in the semifinals.

WPIAL runner-up Quaker Valley (15-2) took care of District 3 champ Berks Catholic, 4-1. The Quakers swept singles with straight set wins from Kirsten Close, Avery Allan and Jay Olawaiye and picked up a win at No. 1 doubles from Livia Jobbins and Jane Lenhard.

Quaker Valley will face District 2 champ Scranton Prep in the semifinals.

In Class 3A, WPIAL champ Mt. Lebanon (17-0) didn’t drop a set in a 5-0 victory over District 2 champion Abington Heights. Jackie Tang, Michelle Yang and Elena Tatel rolled through the singles matches as did Sylvie Eriksen and Sarah Stroh and Alejandra Garcia and Maggie Meehan in doubles.

The Blue Devils will meet District 1 champ Lower Merion in the semifinals.

Lower Merion knocked off Shady Side Academy, 4-1, in the quarters. Brooke Henderson won at No. 2 singles for the Bulldogs (14-3). Bethel Park lost 3-0 to District 1 runner-up Council Rock South.
