Through the Years: 60 years ago, Tarentum ended season on high note

Each week throughout the high school football season, the Valley News Dispatch will take a look at the players, coaches and events that shaped our scholastic history.

Tarentum ended its season on a winning note as the Redcats downed Fox Chapel in nonconference play, 33-21, on Nov. 7, 1964. Ron Misejka tallied two Tarentum touchdowns.

75 years ago

• Tarentum remained alive in the WPIAL title chase with a 14-6 victory over Homestead at Cumberland Posey Field. Paul Blake’s 1-yard run in the in the fourth quarter was decisive.

• Joe Seinera ran for two touchdowns as Freeport took the measure of Kittanning, 18-7.

60 years ago

• East Deer’s Tony (Tank) Taliani, on a tackle-eligible play, caught a 6-yard scoring pass from Joe Novosat that proved to be the difference in a 13-6 Bucks victory over Elders Ridge.

50 years ago

• Leechburg clinched a berth in the AIC Bowl with a 28-14 win over Springdale. Gary Shavensky ran for two touchdowns and threw two others to Gary Cockroft and Ed Hileman.

• Valley ended the season on a winning note with a 36-0 romp over Hempfield. Kevin Thrower and John Martin scored two TDs each for the Vikings.

40 years ago

• Jim Rearic scored on runs of 64, 29 and 35 yards to pace Kittanning to a 37-22 victory at Burrell.

• Riverview tuned up for the Class A playoffs with a 20-6 victory over Chartiers-Houston. Chris Bosser tossed a TD to Mike Juliano and scored himself on a 5-yard keeper.

25 years ago

• Highlands lost a heartbreaker to West Mifflin, 10-7, in an opening-round, Class 3A playoff game. An early 96-yard pass from Justin Bouch to Jason Thies held up until the Titans scored with 1 minute, 24 seconds left in regulation, then got a field goal in overtime.

• Phil Sabatini raced 96 yards with an interception with 1:08 to go, lifting Riverview to a 36-28 playoff win at Carmichaels.

10 years ago

• Plum shocked Penn Hills, 17-6, in an opening round Class 4A playoff game. Zachary Martin and Nathan Turchick scored second quarter TDs as the Mustangs ended a 14-game losing streak against the Indians.

• Kittanning’s football history ended on a sour note with the Wildcats dropping a 55-20 decision to Aliquippa in a first round Class 2A playoff game despite Zane Dudek’s two TDs

Five years ago

• Apollo-Ridge scored with 1:30 to go to cut a New Brighton lead to 28-21. But Klay Fitzroy’s onside kick recovery was disallowed by the officials, ruling the ball didn’t travel the requisite 10 yards, and the Lions won the first-round Class 2A playoff.
