Norwin notebook: Soccer standout headlines all-section list

Norwin boys soccer standout Daniel Maddock was named the player of the year in Section 1-4A by the Big 5/6 Conference, an online entity that covers the largest classifications in the WPIAL.

A quick, get-ahead-of-the-pack forward, Maddock also was a first-team all-section pick after scoring 22 goals and handing out 35 assists this season.

He finished with 58 goals and 35 assists in his career.

“He carried us this year,” Norwin coach Scott Schuchert said, “and I sat him against the lesser-skilled teams or he would’ve had 30-plus goals.”

Maddock was joined on the first team by four teammates: sophomore midfielders Ryan Schoemer and Chase Molinaro and senior defenders Dylan Moyer and Ryan Schiller.

Senior defender Tanner Schneck made the second team.

Norwin’s resurgent girls team was recognized by the Big 5/6.

Senior midfielder Julia Bursick and junior defender Cameryn Reed made the first team in Section 1-4A.

Five Lady Knights players were picked for the second team in junior defenders Bella Buscemi and Alexa Kobus, sophomore defender Siena Ali, freshman forward Tatum Casper and senior midfielder Carmella Simco.

All-section volleyball

The Big 5/6 Conference also recognizd its all-section girls volleyball players.

Among them was Norwin senior hitter Addison Matovich, who made the Section 3-4A first team.

WCCA volleyball stars

Norwin outside hitter Addison Matovich and middle hitter Brandi Brozeski were selected to play in the 3rd Westmoreland County Coaches Association All-Star Girls Volleyball Match set for 6 p.m. Nov. 19 at Ligonier Valley.

The game is for the top senior players in the county.

Matovich and Brozeski will suit up for the West team.

WCCA at a glance

The winter portion of the Westmoreland County Coaches Association calendar features three events.

The first is the girls all-star volleyball match.

The annual boys basketball shootout will be Dec. 21 at Hempfield and Jeannette, and the always-popular wrestling championships will be Jan. 10 at Greensburg Salem.

Men’s soccer

Penn State Behrend: Freshman goalkeeper Anthony Scalise registered his first college playoff win, making three saves in a 2-1 win over Mt Aloysius in the AMCC semifinals. Scalise was a big reason Norwin won its first WPIAL championship last season.

Women’s volleyball

Waynesburg: Senior Jordan Stein had 20 digs in a 3-0 loss to Saint Vincent in the final match of the regular season.

Wrestling

Bucknell: Fifth-year 133-pounder Kurt Phipps won a 17-0 major decision in 3 minutes as the Bison stomped Morgan State, 35-8.

Women’s basketball

Allegheny: Freshman Ava Kobus played 30 minutes off the bench in the Gators’ season opener. She had six points and three steals.

Grove City: Senior Mara Polczynski had 10 points, five rebounds and four steals over 24 minutes as the Wolverines tipped off with an 89-55 loss to John Carroll.

Holy Family: Freshman forward Lauren Palangio, last year’s TribLive Westmoreland player of the year, contributed five points, two rebounds and two assists in her college debut, a 71-51 loss to District of Columbia.
