High school roundup for Nov. 29, 2024: Thomas Jefferson girls speed past Quaker Valley

Kaylee DeAngelo scored 14 points to lead Thomas Jefferson to a 66-23 victory over Quaker Valley at Montour tournament as WPIAL girls basketball season opened Friday. Riley McCabe followed with 13 points and Maggie Spell added 12 for the Jaguars (1-0). Mimi Thiero scored 14 points for Quaker Valley (0-1).
Avella 45, Mapletown 32 – Ava Frank led Avella (1-0) with 19 points and Haleigh Rush added nine at the Avella tournament. Helena Cumpston scored 12 points and Makenna Lotspeich had 10 for Mapletown (0-1).
Deer Lakes 39, Sto-Rox 18 – Anna Clark scored 12 points and Olivia Ryan added nine as Deer Lakes (1-0) opened its season with a victory over Sto-Rox (0-1) in the tipoff tournament hosted by the Lancers.
Geibel Catholic 55, Jefferson-Morgan 42 – Emma Larkin led Geibel Catholic (1-0) with 21 points and Mallory Clemmer added 18 at the Jefferson-Morgan tournament. Bailey Cervone scored 13 points for Jefferson-Morgan (0-1).
Grove City 50, Laurel 16 – Izzy Gamble scored 26 points for Grove City (1-0) at the Mercer tournament. Maelee Hill scored eight points for Laurel (0-1).
Hampton 48, Apollo-Ridge 21 – Maria Nyilas and Ellie Klock each scored eight points to lead Hampton (1-0) to a win at the Leechburg tournament. Kyler Tolan led Apollo-Ridge (0-1) with eight points as well.
Keystone Oaks 55, Hopewell 38 – Alynna Wagner scored 18 points and Hannah York added 16 to lead Keystone Oaks (1-0) at the South Side tournament. Payton Hamilton added 11 for the Golden Eagles. Caylee Sundy led Hopewell (0-1) with 18 points.
Ligonier Valley 41, Carmichaels 20 – Sydnee Foust led Ligonier Valley (1-0) with 15 points and Adleigh Meyers added nine at the Jefferson-Morgan tournament. Ali Jacobs scored 10 points for Carmichaels (0-1).
McGuffey 52, Burgettstown 34 – Taylor Schumacher scored 26 points and Lexi Ewig added 14 to lead McGuffey (1-0) over Burgettstown (0-1) at the Avella tournament.
Montour 41, Knoch 33 – Abigail Cleary scored 18 points and Tiffany Miller added 14 to lift Montour (1-0) to victory at the tournament hosted by the Spartans. Jada Burgard led Knoch (0-1) with 19 points.
Valley 61, Leechburg 23 – Janelle Norman scored 25 points and Ameria Simmons added 19 for Valley (1-0) at the Leechburg tournament. Addie Zanotto scored 15 points for Leechburg (0-1).
West Greene 46, Beth-Center 40 – Kendra Tharp scored 17 points and Madelyn Roberts added 13 to lead West Greene (1-0) at the Jefferson-Morgan tournament. Violet Trump led all scorers with 20 points and Callie Dorsey chipped in 10 for Beth-Center (0-1). West Greene jumped out to a 14-2 lead but Beth-Center led 25-24 at halftime.
Williamsburg 53, Indiana 45 – Leanna Royer scored 17 points to lead Williamsburg (1-0) past Indiana (1-0) in the Forest Hills tournament. Laken Kugler led Indiana with 10 points.
Boys basketball
Beaver 60, Grove City 52 – Nick Krzeczowski and Brady Mayo scored 18 points apiece and Junior Marino added 14 for Beaver (1-0) at the Shenango tournament. Nathan Greer scored 21 points and Ben Fischer had 12 for Grove City (0-1).
Blackhawk 67, Rochester 34 – Justin Shanor scored 19 points and Tyler Heckathorn added 16 to help Blackhawk (1-0) past Rochester (0-1) at the Ellwood City tournament.
Chartiers-Houston 53, Frazier 29 – Nate Gregory scored 11 points and Jake Persinsky added 10 for Chartiers-Houston (1-0) at the McGuffey tournament. Dalian McManus and Kolby Stewart scored 10 points apiece for Frazier (0-1).
Deer Lakes 61, River Valley 27 – Nathaniel Moore hit for 21 points and J.T. McCue chipped in 11 as Deer Lakes (1-0) defeated River Valley (0-1) in the Armstrong tournament.
Highlands 55, Armstrong 49 – Ty Hall led all scorers with 21 points and Troy Bielak and Carmine Lacava each added 14 points to power Highlands (1-0) at the tournament hosted by the River Hawks. Jacob Szep had 16 points and Jaydon Oliver added 13 for Armstrong (0-1).
Hopewell 68, Western Beaver 31 – James Armstrong scored 23 points and Tre Cameron contributed 14 for Hopewell (1-0) at the South Side tournament. Jackson Liller led Western Beaver (0-1) with 17 points.
Indiana 72, Marion Center 40 – Stanford Webb of Indiana (1-0) led all scorers with 25 points and five 3-pointers while Aaron Webb and Dominic Kowchuck scored 18 and 10 respectively in a victory over Marion Center (0-1). Cam Rozier scored 17 points for Marion Center.
Keystone Oaks 85, South Side 53 – Erond Jakupi hit for 28 points and Bruno Onate added 19 to power Keystone Oaks (1-0) at the South Side tournament. Joseph Colton had 15 and Ethan Spivak 13 for the Golden Eagles. Andrew Corfeld scored 17 points and Carter Wilson had 14 for South Side (0-1).
Laurel 69, Commodore Perry 22 – Jayden Iorio scored 16 points and Luca Santini and Mason Ernst added 12 points apiece to lead Laurel (1-0) past Commodore Perry (0-1) at the Laurel tournament.
Ringgold 61, Charleroi 46 – Szyair Dungee and Demetri Lowe scored 13 points apiece for Ringgold (1-0) at the MVI Shootout Classic. Jackson Keranko scored 13 points and Shea Smith had 12 for Charleroi (0-1).
Riverside 52, Sharpsville 37 – McCartney Plassmeyer and Logan Young each scored 17 points and Drake Fox contributed 13 to power Riverside (1-0) at the Laurel tournament. Aiden Carman led Sharpsville (0-1) with 24 points.
Serra Catholic 76, Brownsville 38 – Owen Dumbrowski had 21 points to hit the 1,000-point mark for his career for Serra Catholic (1-0) at the MVI Shootout Classic. Tyler Sapida and Mark Thomas added 12 and Sean Walker scored 10. Jeremy Praster led Brownsville (0-1) with 13 points.
South Allegheny 59, Elizabeth Forward 35 – Drew Cook scored 19 points and Camden Lewis had 14 for South Allegheny (1-0) at the MVI Shootout Classic. James Gile scored 10 points for Elizabeth Forward (0-1).
Thomas Jefferson 76, Belle Vernon 58 – Nick Trklja scored 26 points and Noah Kaszer added 21 for Thomas Jefferson (1-0) at the MVI Shootout Classic. Zion Moore scored 23 points and Curtis Wade had 14 for Belle Vernon (0-1). Justin Fry added 12 points and Brady Kraus had 10 for the Jaguars.
Union 64, Ellwood City 58 – Lucas Stanley hit for 35 points, surpassing the 1,000 mark for his career as Union (1-0) won at the tournament hosted by the Wolverines. Jordyn Kelley added 11 points and Jamel Mitchell had 10 for the Scotties. Aaron Lake and Maykel Cuevas scored 16 points apiece for Ellwood City (0-1).
Wrestling
Southwest Kickoff Classic – Five Franklin Regional wrestlers won individual titles and the Panthers ran away with the team race at Valley. Nico Sarnic (139), Max Firestine (145), Luke Ankney (152), Henry Patts (189) and Elisua Daugherty (215) won titles for Franklin Regional. Other champs were Valley’s Radyn Thomas (121) and Greensburg Salem heavyweight David Peters.
