High school roundup for Dec. 5, 2024: Blackhawk wins battle of state champs

In a matchup of reigning state champions, Aubree Hupp scored 17 points and Andrea Kinger hit a pair of free throws with five seconds left to lead Blackhawk to a 49-46 victory over Kennedy Catholic in nonsection girls basketball Thursday.
Bella Magestro scored 16 points, Tori Harvey added 14 and Layke Fields had 10 for Kennedy Catholic (0-1). Blackhawk (2-1) won the Class 4A PIAA championship last season. Kennedy Catholic won in Class 2A.
Beaver 57, Rochester 52 – Annsley Baker scored 19 points and Bridget Mayo contributed 15 to lead Beaver (2-0) to a nonsection win. Marque Taylor scored 20 and Tia Yellock had 16 for Rochester (0-3).
Chartiers Valley 35, Mt. Lebanon 33 – Rachel Boehm scored 12 points and Emma Reynolds added 11 as Chartiers Valley (1-2) won a back-and-forth battle of girls basketball powers. Payton Collins scored 13 points and Cali Green added 10 for Mt. Lebanon (2-2).
Deer Lakes 32, Hampton 31 – Sophia Laurenza scored 14 points and Anna Clark added 10 to lift Deer Lakes (4-0) to a nonsection win. Katie Christy led Hampton (3-1) with eight points. The Lancers outscored the Talbots 8-2 in the third quarter after trailing by three at the half.
Ellwood City 62, Laurel 32 – Delaney Sturgeon hit for 31 points to power Ellwood City (2-1) to a nonsection win. Caitlin Kreitzer added 11 and Kayla Jones and Elsie Sturgeon each had 10 for the Wolverines. Macey Cwynar led Laurel (1-3) with 12 points.
Hopewell 50, Riverside 39 – Led by 14 points from Avery Boyd and 12 from Maya Richburg, Hopewell (1-3) picked up a nonsection win. Emma Stockman scored 12 and Camryn Friello 10 for Riverside (1-3).
Penn-Trafford 57, Penn Hills 18 – Lauren Marton and Hanna Weishaar each scored 10 points and Penn-Trafford (4-0) hit six 3-pointers in the first quarter and rolled to a nonsection win. Milani Oliver led all scorers with 12 points for Penn Hills (0-1).
Ringgold 47, South Allegheny 9 – Alayna Macioce scored 15 points and Addison Jenkins chipped in 10 to lead Ringgold (1-0) to a nonsection win. Jaz Farnan led South Allegheny (0-3) with six points.
Trinity 63, Serra Catholic 25 – Gabby Rieg scored 20 points, including six 3-pointers, and Sutton Williamson had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead Trinity (2-0) at the South Park tournament. Bella Dumbroski scored 16 for Serra Catholic (0-2).
Woodland Hills 59, McKeesport 33 – Led by 15 points from Kalena Earl-Hayden, 14 from Nijayah Estes and 12 from Mylee Young, Woodland Hills (2-0) picked up a nonsection win. Emily Eisenberg scored 15 for McKeesport (0-4).
Boys basketball
Bentworth 52, Charleroi 50 – Ben Hays racked up 34 points to carry Bentworth (1-1) to a nonsection win. Jackson Keranko scored 14 and Shea Smith added 11 for Charleroi (1-2).
Bishop Canevin 48, Lincoln Park 38 – Jackson Maddix hit for 21 points and Drew Allen added 14 to power Bishop Canevin (1-2) to a nonsection win. Aaron Wehner led Lincoln Park (1-2) with 18 points.
New Brighton 72, South Side 60 – Dash Graham scored 19 points and Joey Kennedy followed with 18 to help New Brighton (1-1) to a nonsection win. Isaac Kohlmeyer added 12 for the Lions. Andrew Corfeld led South Side (2-2) with 17 points. Carter Wilson had 15 and Mateja Pavlovich 10 for the Rams.
West Allegheny 62, Steel Valley 36 – Jonah Buglak scored 13 points and Josiah Johnson added 12 as West Allegheny (2-2) broke open a nonsection game with a 15-0 run in the third quarter. Da’Ron Barksdale and Nate Yuhas scored 11 apiece for Steel Valley (0-4).
Wilmington 47, Environmental Charter 43 – Freddy Zehetner scored 24 points as Wilmington snapped a 35-game losing streak. Elijah McBride scored 17 for Enviornmental Charter (0-2).
Hockey
Baldwin 2, Canon-McMillan 1 – Nate Buys scored the game-winning goal with 7:52 left in the third period to lead Baldwin (3-5-1) to a Class 2A win. Jeremy Pollard also scored and Austin Landosky made 30 saves for Baldwin. Brenden Lomago scored and Aiden Bobbs made 29 saves for Canon-McMillan (3-7).
Central Valley 6, Sewickley Academy 5 (SO) – Connor Svaranowic scored twice and Mikey Crea and Logan Sullivan each had a goal and an assist to lead Central Valley (3-5) to a shootout win in Division 2. Gavin Svaranowic also scored. Martio Thomas had two goals and an assist and Cole Carlson scored the tying goal in the third period for Sewickley Academy (0-8-1).
Deer Lakes 5, Elizabeth Forward 3 – Ryan Grunden scored a hat trick and Mason Cervone collected two goals and two assists to lead Deer Lakes (7-4) to a Division 2 win. Nikita Oleksiienko made 29 saves for Deer Lakes. Brant Alekson, Bobby Boord Jr. and Luke Forbes scored for Elizabeth Forward (6-3).
Fox Chapel 9, Hempfield 8 – Dominic Casile collected four goals and an assist to lead Fox Chapel (6-1-1) to a wild Class 2A win. Trip Goehring had a goal and four assists and Tucker Cullen added a goal and three assists for Fox Chapel. Colby Herron scored twice and JJ Williams had a goal and four assists for Hempfield (3-5).
Greensburg Salem 7, Beaver 3 – Bryce Ferace scored a hat trick and Jeremiah Faulk added a pair of goals to lead Greensburg Salem (3-5) to a Class A win. Jake Fink had a goal and two assists and Luke Dieter also scored. Zack Masters and Trevor Schmidt each had a goal and an assist and Sammy Mecchia also scored for Beaver (2-6-1).
Mars 5, North Hills 3 – Matthew Lestitian scored twice, Gavin Stevenson and Jack Tirch each had a goal and an assist and Grant Weaver also scored for Mars (8-2) in a Class A win. Jonathan Trosky had two goals and an assist and Ameer Cooper also scored for North Hills (4-5).
Morgantown 5, Carrick 1 – Geno Valenti had a goal and two assists and Ayden Shepard added a goal and an assist to help Morgantown (9-1) to a Division 2 win. Drew Bird scored for Carrick (4-4-2).
West Allegheny 6, Freeport 2 – Branden Switalski had two goals and an assist and Maddox Luketic had a goal and two assists to lead West Allegheny (4-5) to a Class A win. Austin Falick had a goal and an assist and John Wineland dished out three assists. LIam McKivigan and Ethan Eyler scored for Freeport (1-11).
Wilmington 3, Connellsville 2 – Beckett Miller had a goal and an assist and Justin Girman and Alex Rodgers also scored to lead Wilmington (1-6) to a Division 2 win. Will Whittaker III and Sam Denny scored for Connellsville (6-3-1).
