2024 PIAA football playoffs recap: WPIAL shut out of championships for 2nd time in 37 years

For only the second time in the 37-year history of the PIAA football playoffs, the WPIAL was denied winning any state championships.

With Central Catholic in Class 6A and Avonworth in 3A both settling for state silver, it marked the first time since 1992 that a WPIAL team didn’t win a PIAA football title.

In that year, Upper St. Clair in 4A, Blackhawk in 3A and East Allegheny in 2A all lost in the state finals at Mansion Park in Altoona.

The Philadelphia Catholic League in District 12 was the only district to win two state championships with St. Joseph’s Prep in 6A and Monsignor Bonner/Archbishop Prendergast in 4A bringing gold back to Philly.

The other champions were Bishop McDevitt in 5A for District 3, Northwestern Lehigh from District 11 with a perfect 16-0 record beating Avonworth in a 3A thriller, Troy with an undefeated 16-0 mark from District 4 in 2A and Bishop Guilfoyle from District 6 in Class A.
