The Fox Chapel boys basketball team didn’t plan to change its approach when it went up to Class 6A.
The Foxes have found success in the WPIAL’s largest class before. The Foxes still have a lot of work to do to claim the Section 1-6A crown, but they have put themselves in position to make a strong run at the title.
Fox Chapel won its first five section games to surge to first place. While the Foxes (10-2, 5-0) took a loss around the holidays to Neighborhood Academy, they bounced back with wins over North Allegheny and North Hills.
In a 53-39 victory over the Tigers, Caden Kaiser scored 17 points, Asher White added 15 and John Rehak had 14. In a 54-52 win over the Indians, Grant Fenton scored a career-high 17 points, hitting four 3-pointers. Kasier added 16 points.
Back with a win
The Fox Chapel hockey team is in fourth place in the PIHL’s Class 2A standings. The Foxes went into the holiday break with a sour taste following a 7-5 loss to Latrobe. However, Fox Chapel didn’t let the disappointment linger.
The Foxes built a 4-0 lead against Baldwin before hanging on for a 5-2 win Jan. 6. Tucker Cullen scored twice, while Hayden Ferra, Liam Wiseman and Dominic Casile added tallies for Fox Chapel.
Trip Goehring doled out three assists for the Foxes (8-2).
Feinstein finds place
Shady Side Academy graduate Gabe Feinstein has found a home on the Middlebury (Vt.) College squash team. While playing for the No. 20-ranked Panthers, Feinstein beat Hamilton’s Jacob Shulman Jan. 7 in the fourth singles match.
Middlebury won the match 9-0.
First loss
The Fox Chapel girls wrestling team won’t let a 39-24 loss to Pine-Richland drag down what has been a strong start to the season for the fledgling program. Fox Chapel opened by winning its first three dual meets before losing 39-24 to the Rams early in January.
Vile Filar (235 pounds), Atia DiGioia (100), Emma Srodes (112), Caroline Slember (112) and Evelyn Owens (136) won matches for the Foxes.
Srodes and Yogi Zhou are tied for a team-high five wins for Fox Chapel.
Bulldogs snap slide
Shady Side Academy’s boys basketball team will be relieved to be in the win column. After several defeats, the Bulldogs bounced back with a Section 3-3A win over Apollo-Ridge on Jan. 7.
The good news for the Bulldogs (3-8, 1-1) is that they have only played two section games so far. Shady Side Academy locked down the Vikings in the win, beating Apollo-Ridge, 69-29.
