High school roundup for Feb. 19, 2025: Greensburg Central Catholic fends off Mimi Thiero, Quaker Valley

Erica Gribble scored 22 points and No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic survived a big game by Quaker Valley star Mimi Thiero to secure a 56-47 victory in the WPIAL Class 3A girls basketball quarterfinals Wednesday night at Mt. Lebanon.

Thiero scored 32 points for the No. 7 Quakers (14-9). Jayla Peterson added 16 points and Avery Jones had 10 for the Centurions (19-5), who will face No. 3 OLSH in Saturday’s semifinals.

Ellwood City 40, Keystone Oaks 37 – Caitlin Kreitzer scored 13 points and No. 12 Ellwood City (15-8) came back from a 30-25 deficit entering the fourth quarter to earn its second straight upset win in the Class 3A bracket. Delaney Sturgeon added 10 points for the Wolverines, who will meet top-seeded Shady Side Academy in the semifinals Saturday. Payton Hamilton led No. 4 Keystone Oaks (19-3) with nine points.

Mars 55, Bethel Park 42 – Cecilia Christy scored 20 points and Alexis Cashdollar followed with 17 to lead No. 13 Mars (15-9) to a Class 5A quarterfinal win. Carmella McDole added 10 points for the Fightin’ Planets, who will face top-seeded South Fayette in the semifinals Saturday. Sadie Orie led No. 12 Bethel Park (12-12) with 11 points.

OLSH 50, Avonworth 44 – Leah Parker and Claudia Ierullo scored 22 points apiece to power No. 3 OLSH (21-3) in a Class 3A quarterfinal that was tied at halftime. The Chargers will take on No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic in Saturday’s semifinals. Greta O’Brien scored 18 points and Emma Obersteiner added 12 for No. 6 Avonworth (16-8).

Peters Township 51, Indiana 32 – Natalie Wetzel scored 14 points in her return to the lineup after missing a first-round game due to injury as No. 2 Peters Township (21-3) earned a Class 5A quarterfinal victory. Taylor McCullough also scored 14 points and Bri Morreale added 10 for Peters, which will meet No. 6 Thomas Jefferson in the semifinals Saturday. Emily Betsinger scored 12 points to lead No. 7 Indiana (18-6).

Shady Side Academy 55, Riverside 20 – Karis Thomas scored 19 points as top-seeded Shady Side Academy (23-0) rolled to a Class 3A quarterfinal win. Leah Buford added nine points for the Bulldogs, who will face No. 12 Ellwood City in the semifinals Saturday. Gabriella Finch led Riverside (15-9) with eight points.

Boys basketball

Aquinas Academy 69, Geibel Catholic 40 – Jake Guillen finished with 24 points to lead No. 4 Aquinas Academy (18-5) to a Class A quarterfinal win. Sam Duer added 14 points and Jonah Burchill had 11 for the Crusaders, who will take on top-seeded Neighborhood Academy in the semifinals Saturday. Roman Riccelli scored 18 points and Seth Dolan added 14 for No. 5 Geibel Catholic (14-9).

Beaver 58, Central Valley 50 – Brady Mayo scored 26 points and No. 3 Beaver (19-4) came back from a two-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter to win in the Class 4A quarterfinals. Nick Krzeczowski added 10 points for the Bobcats, who will take on No. 2 North Catholic in the semifinals Saturday. Isaiah Jeter scored 19 points and Adam Shroads had 12 for No. 6 Central Valley (19-5).

Carrick 73, Bedford 62 – Brayden Fisher went off for 30 points, Treshaun Beasley followed with 20 and Kelenn Ward scored 14 as Carrick (9-15) won in the District 5-8 Class 3A subregional. Jacob Wilson led Bedford with 17 points.The Raiders will face Chestnut Ridge in Friday’s regional semifinals.

Cheswick Christian Academy 54, Cornerstone Prep 38 – Brady Rochkind had a double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds as Cheswick Christian Academy won in the Southwestern Christian Athletic Conference semifinals. Marquis Johnson added 10 points for the Chargers (19-6), who will meet Pittsburgh Christian Academy in the finals at 5 p.m. Saturday at Beaver County Christian. Landon Tomasiak led Cornerstone Prep with 13 points.

Nazareth Prep 53, Monessen 38 – Will Evans scored 12 points to lead No 3 Nazareth Prep (18-4) to a Class A quarterfinal victory. Micah Caldwell and Christian Rucker added 10 points apiece for the Saints, who will meet No. 2 Serra Catholic in the semifinals Saturday. TyVaughn Kershaw scored a game-high 13 points and Devontae Robinson added 10 for No. 6 Monessen (13-10).

Neighborhood Academy 66, Beaver County Christian 20 – Courtney Wallace had 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for his 16th triple-double of the season in a Class A quarterfinal win for top-seeded Neighborhood Academy (22-1). Kedron Gilmore added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Bulldogs, who will meet No. 4 Aquinas Academy in the semifinals Saturday. Hunter Mozely scored 10 points to lead No. 8 Beaver County Christian (10-10).

Serra Catholic 80, Summit Academy 61 – Owen Dumbrowski scored 25 points and Mark Johnson added 19 to send No. 2 Serra Catholic (20-3) to a Class A quarterfinal victory. Brayden Graham finished with 16 and Jake Holmes chipped in 11 for the Eagles, who will face No. 3 Nazareth Prep in the semifinals Saturday. Ky-zir Rowan scored 27 points, Robert Young added 13 and Quaran Joiner had 11 for No. 7 Summit Academy (10-9).
