Trib HSSN girls basketball player of the week – Brady Wehner
School: North Catholic
Class: Sophomore
Height: 5-foot-8
Position: Guard
#Earned: After she chipped in and helped North Catholic win a WPIAL championship as a freshman last season, graduation hit the Trojans hard and Brady Wehner was asked to play a much bigger role this winter. The sophomore has answered the bell and was the team’s leading scorer. Despite losing in the district semifinals to eventual champion Oakland Catholic, North Catholic is the only District 7 team left standing after three rounds of the PIAA Class 4A playoffs. Wehner has led North Catholic in scoring in all three state playoff wins. She scored 13 in the first-round rout of Penn Cambria, 59-29, she tallied 18 points in a second-round blowout of District 10 champion Harbor Creek, 57-33, and she scored 17 points while freshman Sam Weir added 13 in the Trojanettes’ quarterfinal triumph over WPIAL runner-up Blackhawk, 51-44.
Background: It is still early, but the 10th grader hopes to start drawing interest and wants to continue to play basketball at the next level starting in the fall of 2027. Wehner averaged 15 points per game this season in helping North Catholic share the Section 1-4A title with Oakland Catholic. She played volleyball through middle school and may decide at some point to play again in high school. Athletics has been a big part of the Wehner household. Her dad Jim was a head football coach at Yough, Avonworth and Baldwin and an assistant at Central Catholic and her mom Joan played basketball at McKeesport and college at Duquesne. Brady’s older sister Jayla played basketball at Norwin and Marian University in Indiana and her older brother Payton played hoops and football at Central Catholic and is now a quarterback at Saint Francis. She likes to listen to music on bus trips and will listen to any artist or group and likes many different types of music. She also enjoys watching movies with her siblings, no horror movies though.
What coach says: “Brady scored in every way,” North Catholic coach Molly Rottman said about Wehner’s game against Hickory. “She got to the rim, hit some pull-up jump shots and hit some tough, deep 3-pointers. Brady was perfect from 2s and shot 43% from 3s. She was hard to guard.
“The key was Brady’s confidence in her self,” Rottmann said of the Blackhawk game. “She had a shot blocked early and struggled a bit to score but didn’t waver in her confidence and continued to look to attack and create opportunities for herself and her teammates. Brady hit some huge shots in the second half as well as finding her teammates to get them great looks. A lot of younger players her age would have been hesitant or down on themselves, but Brady came out more determined in the second half.
“Brady is a competitor. She doesn’t want to lose at anything. It’s in her family genes,” Rottman said. “She is always going to push herself and her teammates to do what is needed to win.
“Last season, Brady had the luxury of Alayna Rocco being the main focus of the opposing team’s defense,” Rottmann said. “Brady was more open and didn’t have to work as hard for her looks as a freshman. Now Brady is the focus of the defense, so there aren’t any easy shots. Brady has done a good job of developing more weapons. She has a great mid-range pull-up, reads screens well and is making the correct decisions depending on how the defense is playing them and is doing a better job of getting to the rim.
“She has absolutely taken on some leadership responsibilities,” Rottmann said. “Brady was really good about being at every summer open gym she could be at. Summer is a busy time with AAU, but she realized the importance of working on her own game, as well as instilling in our new kids the work ethic that is needed. That set the precedence and tone for our season. Brady consistently shows up. Next year we anticipate her taking an even bigger role in filling the void of Sarah Loughry’s leadership. They are good friends, and Sarah has done a good job of modeling the work ethic and leadership that we will need Brady to provide next season.”
