While the WPIAL only brought home one gold medal on Saturday, it was one that took its wrestler one step closer to wrestling history. Gavin Teasdale of Jefferson Morgan won his third straight state championship by defeating Austin Clabaugh of Bermudian Springs by major decision, 13-5. It was a dominating performance for the Rockets junior, who finished the season 40-0 and is now 122-0 in his career.

The other finalists in the WPIAL did not fare as well. At 132, Tyler Griffiths of Southmoreland came out strong against returning state champion Brian Courtney of Athens. Griffiths opened up a 3-0 lead into the second period before Courtney stopped a shot by Griffiths, cradled him, and pinned Griffiths in 3:20. At 182, Dominic Fundy of Beth-Center could not get any offense going. Cody Mulligan of Saegertown picked up two takedowns, an escape, and a penalty point en route to a 6-0 win.

In addition to their finalists, the WPIAL also added three third place finishers. At 138, Frazier freshman Thayne Lawrence avenged a quarterfinal loss to Sammy Hepler of Tri-Valley with a dominating 7-2 decision. Freedom senior Kody Komara needed overtime, but was able to collect a takedown in overtime to beat Nathan Haubert of Palisades 3-1. At 182, Derry sophomore Dominic DeLuca capped a strong postseason by defeating Fort LeBoeuf’s Julian Gorring in the ultimate tiebreaker 2-0. With choice in the ultimate tiebreaker, Gorring chose top, but DeLuca was able to reverse him to grab the victory.

For a full recap of the AA PIAA Championships, tune in to Inside the WPIAL Wrestling Circle, Monday night at 7:00 PM. We will be joined by Jefferson Morgan’s Gavin Teasdale on the show.
