It was the perfect night for a softball game. Clear, calm and cool — Arguably the demeanor of the junior pitcher for Baldwin, Jaimie Schleicher. Although Peters Township did score a run in the 7th inning, the late rally wasn’t enough as the Highlanders defeated the Indians 2-1 at Baldwin High School.

Schleicher started the game perfect through 3 and two-thirds innings with 5 strikeouts. She also helped offensively in the bottom of the 3rd, hitting an RBI-single, allowing freshman Taylor Dadig to score after she singled and stole a base.

Senior pitcher Kellyn Perich for the Indians stayed strong after that, only allowing one more run. In the bottom of the 6th, sophomore Samantha Wampler singled, advanced to second on a walk by junior Charlotte Nieman, took third on a pass-ball, then scored on a wild pitch.

The Indians seemed to have found an answer to Schleicher’s pitching in the 7th. After two long flyouts to centerfield, sophomore Olivia Catellone hit a homerun over the left field fence. Sophomore Jenny Fitzgerald followed it up with a single, and Alexis McKnight reached on a walk. Both girls would advance a base after a wild pitch from Schleicher. With the winning run now in scoring position, Schleicher was able to end the game by striking out the next batter.

Schleicher pitched 7 innings, struck out 8, allowed 3 hits,1 walk and 1 run. Perich took the loss for the Indians. She pitched 6 innings, struck out 5, allowed 4 hits, 3 walks and 2 runs.

Baldwin advances to 5-1 in the AAAA Section 4 conference, 6-1 overall. Peters Township falls to 3-4 in the conference, 6-5 overall.
