The Freeport Yellowjackets took a major step in continuing their section supremacy on Tuesday night, as they defeated the Knoch Knights in straight sets. Freeport captured the victory by the score of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-19.
In a battle of the top two teams in Class AA Section 4, the Yellowjackets scored a wire-to-wire victory in the opening set, including an eight-point run after the Knights pulled within four at 16-12.
The second set opened with a Knoch point, which provided the first lead of the match for the Knights. The lead would be short-lived, though, and with the teams deadlocked at 7-7, the Yellowjackets scored six consecutive points to take command.
In the third and final set, it was the Yellowjackets that had to fend off a late surge from Knoch. Freeport held a six-point edge, 18-12, but the Knights pulled within two points, at 19-17, to add some drama to the contest. Freeport ultimately created separation, though, and scored the final three points to seal the outcome.
Senior hitter and all-state performer Zoe Pawlak made significant contributions, despite being limited by injury and unable to perform her patented jump service. Without that weapon, Pawlak still added a game-high 16 kills. Grace Ward was strong on the serve in place of Pawlak, as she provided five aces for the Yellowjackets. Moreover, seniors Morgan Ruppersberger and Meredith Tirdel made key contributions in the victory.
For the Knights, sophomore Sarah Armahizer keyed the attack, scoring a team-leading four kills, while libero and fellow sophomore Carly Bozzo made several strong plays defensively.
The match marks one of the final contests that will be played in Freeport’s gymnasium, known as “the hive”, as the team will move into a new gym in the upcoming weeks.
