District College Football Recap for Saturday, September 19th

Week three of the district college football slate saw a lot of lopsided scores and not a lot of good games. Here are recaps of all the games:

Dayton 24 – Duquesne 13
Connor Kacsor ran for 244 yards and three second half touchdowns on 40 carries as the Flyers go to 2-0. The Dukes led 13-3 in the second on Sam Martello’s fumble recovery in the end zone and Dillon Buechel’s 26 yard pass to Wayne Capers(Char Valley).

The junior QB from Montour threw for 195 yards. Capers led with 6 catches for 75 yards. Duquesne falls to 2-1.

Robert Morris 35 – Notre Dame(Ohio) 24
Forrest Mason returned an interception 9 yards for a touchdown to seal the win for the Colonials. QB Matthew Barr ran for two scores and threw for another for RMU. Barr was 14 of 18 on the day.

Malik grove threw for three touchdowns for Notre Dame, but was intercepted twice. Both teams are now 1-2.

Youngstown State 48 – Saint Francis 3
The 16th ranked Penguins cruised to the win at the Ice Castle. Martin Ruiz ran for 103 yards, Jody Webb added 93 and two scores. Shane Khun also scored twice for the Penguins, now 2-1.
Red Flash QB Zach Drayer was 1 of 12 for 10 yards. Saint Francis is now 1-2.

Clarion 59 – Cheyney 6
Connor Simmons threw for 221 yards and four touchdowns as Clarion goes to 3-0. Matt Lehman has six catches for 96 yards and three scores. Darelle Carson(Perry) also threw a td pass.

The Golden Eagles led 10-6 in the second quarter and proceeded to rip off 49 unanswered points. Cheyney falls to 0-3.

IUP 38 – Lock Haven 13
Drew Harris had 17 totes for 109 yards and a score as IUP won their first of the season. The Crimson Hawks ran for 372 yards. Luigi Lista-Brinza(Pittsburgh Central Catholic) added 84 yards, quarterback Lenny Williams(Sto-Rox) notched 65 and a score.

IUP led only 10-3 at the half before Williams run opened the door to start the third. IUP is now 1-1. Lock Haven falls to 0-3.

Slippery Rock 75 – Millersville 0
The 20th ranked Rock had an easy time on the way to a 3-0 record. Julian Durden(Montour) ran 18 times for 111 yards and three scores in the win. Isiah Neely(OLSH) also ran for a score as the Rock played without the PSAC’s leading rusher in Shamar Greene(West Mifflin).

The Rock defense also scored a safety, a Pick 6 and a fumble return in holding Millersville to minus 52 yards rushing, plus eight quarterback sacks. Millersville falls to 0-3. 

East Stroudsburg 56 – Edinboro 12
The Warriors pick up their first win while the Fighting Scots are 0-3. ESU led 35-0 at the half and posted 565 yards on offense, 438 coming from the arm of Matt Soltes. Soltes threw touchdown passes to five different receivers in the win.

Mercyhurst 20 – Bloomsburg 14
The PSAC feature game of the week was a story of two different halves but in the end the Lakers hold on to go 3-0.

Brendan Boylan, last week’s PSAC West Division Offensive Athlete of the Week, started out where he left off, throwing two first quarter touchdown passes of 42 and 3 yards to FJ Williams to give the Lakers a 14-0 lead after one. Boylan found tight end John Matarazzo(New Castle) his second td catch of the year and a 20-0 halftime lead.

The Huskies scored twice in the third on a Lawrence Elliot four yard run and a Joe Parsnik 1 yard plunge to cut the Mercyhurst lead to six entering the final quarter.

Bloomsburg would drive to the Mercyhurst 25 early in the fourth, but turned the ball over on downs. Jerrin Toomey would intercept a Boylan pass and set the Huskies up at the Lakers 42. Tyler Smith missed a 34 yard field goal attempt and the Lakers dodged a bullet. The Huskies got a James Karasek punt block at midfield but the offense could not take advantage, moving only three yards on the drive.

The Lakers took over with 3:18 left and picked up two first downs to run out the clock. Boylan ended 16 of 35 for 222 yards, Williams had five catches.

Elliot ran 25 times for an even 100 yards, Parsnik added 93 yards on 20 attempts. The Huskies fall to 1-2.

Gannon 66 –  Kutztown 31
The Golden Knights led 21-0 after 15 minutes and 38-10 at the break on their way to 3-0. Liam Nadler was 28-36 for 412 yards and five touchdowns in the win. Jesstin Hamm had seven catches, three for scores. Brock Jones also had a big day, running for 191 yards and three trips to the end zone.

Chad Barton threw for 417 yards and four scores for the Golden Bears, now 1-2.

West Chester 48 – Seton Hill 38
Jarel Elder scored his third and fourth touchdowns of the game in the final three minutes to give West Chester their first win. Elder posted 247 yards on 25 carries. Pat Moriarty also threw for 302 yards. West
Chester is now 1-2, after starting the season in the top 25.

Ardell Brown had six catches for 154 yards for the Griffins, now 1-2. Seton Hill led 38-34 with 5:20 to go on a Khalil Howard one yard run.

California 34 – Shippensberg 26
The Vulcans held on for dear life for the win at Adamson Stadium, going to 2-1. Cal led 34-10 on Aaron Terry’s 97 yard punt return on the final play of the first half but did not score again.

John Franklin staked the Vulcans to a 14-10 lead in the second with a 6 yard run, his second score of the game. James Harris connected with Devin Lomax and Luke Smorey for touchdown passes and Cal U was on a roll.

Sheldon Mayer got the Red Raiders back into the game with an 82 yard punt return in the third, he also added a touchdown catch from Ryan Zapoticky. Billy Deane kicked a 31 yard field goal with 6”40 remaining in regulation to make a one-score deficit. That kick ended a 20 play drive for Shippensburg.

After a three and out for the Vulcans, Zapoticky went to work again. The junior quarterback drove the Red Raiders from their own three to the Cal 30. But Terry came up big again for Cal, intercepting a pass with 1:15 left to seal the win.

The Vulcans were led by Franklin’s 114 yards on 27 carries. Harris struggled for the second time this season, going 14 of 32. 

Both teams are now 2-1, in fact all of the teams in the PSAC East now have at least one loss.

Westminster 38 – Bethany 24
Paul Columbo threw for two scores in the win. Gator Phillips returned an interception 85 yards for the Titans, now 1-1.

WR Eric Blinn(Western Beaver) broke the PAC mark for career catches, he hauled in five passes for 65 yards. Jalen Holmes(New Castle) ran for 80 yards and a score, Both teams are 1-1.

W & J 38 – Carnegie Mellon 14
The #14 Presidents pulled away for the win, scoring 17 straight points.

Sam Benger opened the scoring for the Tartans on a 51 yard run. Pete Coughlin countered with touchdown passes to Daniel Lis(Char-Houston) and Jesse Zubik(Avonworth) in the first quarter. The Coughlin to Zubik connection went for 75 yards.

Coughlin(Upper St. Clair) found Eric Scott(Imani Christian) for a 15 yard score in the second. Benger followed 16 seconds later with an 85 yard run, but the Presidents tacked on a field goal before the half to lead 24-14.

Ryan Ruffing(Thomas Jefferson) ran for a 37 yard score in the third. Coughlin hit Scott for 12 yards and the final score. Ruffing posted 231 yards on 38 carries. Coughlin threw for 309 yards. The Presidents are 3-0.

Benger ran 21 times for 303 yards for CMU, now 0-2.

Thomas More 60 – Thiel 12
The #15 Saints posted 568 yards of offense in the win. QB Jensen Gebhardt threw for 320 yards and four scores, two to Goose Cohorn. The senior receiver finished with ten catches for 216 yards. Thomas More is now 3-0.

QB Ryan Radke threw for a score and ran for another for the Tomcats, now 1-2.

Case Western Reserve 49 – Saint Vincent 14
Case Western led 35-0 at the half. Rob Cuda was 23-30 for 236 yards passing and four scores, he ran for 145 yards on 16 carries. Damen Black caught two fourth quarter touchdowns from Tyler Donahue for Saint Vincent.

Case Western is now 1-1, Saint Vincent falls to 1-2.

Geneva 41 – Waynesburg 24
The GT’s rallied from a 17-7 first quarter deficit to pick up the win at Reeves Field. Aaron Channing threw for 312 yards and five touchdowns. Devin Kelosky(Riverside) made six catches for 110 yards and two scores. Dylan Jones(Laurel) ran 19 times for 84 yards. Geneva is 2-1.

Jake Daugherty threw for three touchdowns for the Yellow Jackets, now 1-2.
