District College Football Recap for September 26th

September is coming to an end and teams are starting to pull away on the local college football front. Division play opened up in the PSAC, conference play continues in the PAC. The NEC schools have to wait one more week before starting their conference acton. 

Here are recaps of ALL the games:

Seton Hill 41 – Slippery Rock 38
In a game of scores and quick answers, the Griffins dump the #14 Rock at Offutt Field.

Christian Strong threw 4 first half touchdown passes for Seton Hill. Strong was 29 of 52 for 472 yards, his counterpart, Dante Nania(Hempfield), posted 414 yards passing and 2 scores.

Jaimiere Dutrieuille opened the scoring for the Rock, on a short pass from Nania. Strong hit Jarvis McClam for a 6 yard strike just a 1:21 later to tie things up. Julian Durden(Montour) capped a 13 play drive with a 2 yard run and a Rock lead. Strong answered 16 seconds later with a 75 yard bomb to Ardell Brown. The first quarter ended with the 14 all score.

Strong took advantage of a short field for for a 21 yard td pass to Larry Joshua, he added a 30 yard pass to Eric Brown to put Seton Hill up 28-14. The Rock had an answer of their own, Nania to Taishan Tucker for a 58 yard score, followed by a Durden 46 yard run and 28-all at the half.

Trailing 31-28, the Griffins’ Brandon Stout scored on a 1 yard run. Seton Hill added two field goals and led 41-31 early in the fourth.

Durden scored his third touchdown of the game with 4:15 left to make a one possession game. The Rock got the ball back after a Strong interception but Mike Wainauskis missed a 22 yard field goal and the Griffins ran out the clock.

Ardell Brown had 6 catches for 134 yards for Seton Hill, now 2-2. Eric Brown has 4 receptions for 123 yards.

Tucker had 8 catches for 139 yards. Durden finished with 26 runs for 146 yards, the Rock is now 3-1. 

California 37 – Edinboro 30
The Fighting Scots scored early in the fourth quarter but could not find the end zone again, falling to 0-4.

Cal jumped out to an early 13-0 lead on two James Franklin touchdown runs. Edinboro got their first points on a safety. The Vulcans added a field goal but Jake Sisson hit Darren Massey for a short touchdown with 30 seconds left in the half to cut the deficit to 16-9.

James Harris gave Cal a 21 point lead with td passes to Garry Brown and Luke Smorey. Sisson answered with two scoring strikes of his own, both to Massey to make it a one score deficit, entering the fourth.

Franklin scored his third touchdown on the day on a 5 yard run. Sisson found Alex Caratelli for a 57 yard scoring play with 11;09 left in regulation. Harris and Sisson traded interceptions, the second by Aaron Terry at the Cal 3 and end the threat. Cal was able to run out much of the final 5 minutes and escaped Erie County with the win.

For Cal, now 3-1, Franklin carried 31 times for 196 yards and Brown had 10 catches for 107 yards. Massey had 10 catches and the 3 scores for the Fighting Scots.

Clarion 47 – Gannon 31
The Golden Eagles are now 4-0 with the win. Connor Simmons connected with Matt Lehman for 4 touchdowns. Simmons was 21-30 for 350 yards. Lehman finished with 151 yards on 9 catches. Delrece Williams added 148 yards on 29 totes with 2 scores.

Gannon, now 3-1, was led by Liam Nadler’s 381 yards and 3 touchdowns, the senior quarterback was sacked 6 times.

IUP 35 – Mercyhurst 13
The Crimson Hawks returned three inbterceptions for touchdowns to gain the win in the PSAC West opener. Takhi Turner started the scoring with a 7 yard pick, Dorian Lane had a key Pick 6 to make the score 21-7 in the third and Steve Franco closed it out with a 50 yard return. Lenny Williams(Sto-Rox0 added a touchdown pass and Luigi Lista-Brinza(Pittsburgh Central Catholic) scored on a 13 yard run in the third. The junior running back finished the day with 164 yards on 20 carries. IUP is now 2-1 and 1-0 in the division.

Brendon Boylan threw 2 touchdown passes for the Lakers, one to tight end John Matarazzo(New Castle), but was intercepted 4 times. Mercyhurst is now 3-1 and 0-1.  

Carnegie Mellon 35 – Geneva 7
Andrew Hearon and Sam Benger each ran for 2 scores as the Tartans pick up the win  at Reeves Field. Benger ran 28 times for 194 yards. CMU picks their first win in three tries, the Tartans are 1-2 in the PAC.

Dylan Jones(Laurel) ran 16 times for 69 yards and a score for Geneva, now 2-2 and 1-1 in conference.

Bethany 27 – Waynesburg 14
Eric Blinn(Western Beaver) added to his career PAC leading totals, posting 12 catches for 107 yards and a touchdown as the Bison pick up the win. Senior QB Lincoln Reyes threw for 342 yards, Tyler Ambush caught 6 passes for 172 yards and a score.

Waynesburg got on the board first as Jake Dougherty hit Dan Davis for a 12 yard score. Reyes countered one play later with a 74 yard pass to Ambush. In the second, Jalen Holmes(New Castle) gave the Bison a 17-7 lead with a 33 yard run. Daugherty hit Davis again , this time for 21 yards and a second score. Reyes went to Blinn late in the half for a 7 yard touchdown and the win.

Holmes added 121 yards on 29 carries. Bethany is now 2-2 overall and !-1 in the PAC. Waynesburg falls to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference.  

Saint Vincent 48 – Grove City 28
The Bearcats scored on a blocked punt, a fumble recovery and return and a Pick 6 on the way to the road win. Damon Black scored twice for Saint Vincent, now 2-2 and 1-1 in conference.

Matt Pennypacker threw for 216 yards and two scores, after coming on in relief. The quarterback added 76 rushing yards. Brett Pinson had 6 catches for 103 yards and a pair of scores. Grove City falls to 0-3 overall. 

Case Western Reserve 41 – Thiel 6
Ryan Radke scored in the first quarter but that would be it for the Tomcats. Rob Cuda threw for 250 yards and 3 touchdowns, the quarterback ran for 91 additional and a score.

Case Western is now @-1 overall and 2-0 in the PAC. Thiel falls to 1-3 and 0-2.

Thomas More 45 – Westminster 14
The #13 Saints turned up the heat in the third quarter, scoring 28 unaswered points to go to 2-0 in the PAC. Jensen Gebhardt’s 58 yard pass to Daylin Garland on the third play of the half and Ian Gunn’s 46 yard Pick 6 were the difference.

Gebhardt was 15 of 22 for 307 yards and 2 scores, the Saints remain perfect at 4-0. Dominque McKinney posted 85 yards rushing for the Titans, who did not score until the fourth quarter. Sophomore Paul Columbo started at QB, he threw for just 85 yards and tossed three interceptions. A Jordan Edwards run and a Shannon Walker touchdown pass provided the scoring for Westminster, now 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the PAC.

Albany 17 – Duquesne 14
Chris King set a career high with 11 catches but it was not enough as the Dukes fall to 2-2 with their second straight loss.

Rafiq Douglas scored on a 1 yard run to give Duquesne a 7-0 lead. DJ Crook put Albany on the board in the second quarter with a td pass to Brad Harris. The Dukes countered when King caught a 14 yard score from Dillon Buechel(Montour) with 13 seconds before halftime to give Duquesne a 14-7 lead.

Crook went to Zee Roberson for a 29 yard score in the third to tie the game. Patrick Toole kicked a 28 yard  field goal late in the third.

The Dukes drove into Albany territory twice in the fourth but could not score, Buechel was picked off on the final play as the Great Danes hold on. Buechel was 18 of 31 for 213 yards, King posted 153 yards.

Crook had 261 yards passing on 19-32. Roberson had 8 catches. Albany is also 2-2.

South Dakota State 24 – Robert Morris 10
The #6 Jackrabbits pull away for the home win. Zach Lujan tossed two second half touchdowns on the way to a 3-0 record.

Lujan opened the scoring with a 10 yard touchdown pass to Jake Wieneke. Connor Shennan kicked a 46 yard field goal to put the Colonials on the board 10 seconds into the second. Issac Wallace scored on a 3 yard run but Matthew Barr countered with a 6 yard td pass to Nick Lamica. Jay Carlson added 2 short field goals to put SDSU up 20-10.

Lujan connected with Brandon Andrews in the third and hit Wieneke for a 29 yard scoring strike in the fourth. The quarterback set a career high with 395 passing yards on 25-43. Wieneke had 7 catches for 163 yards.

Dante Satcher led the Colonials with 6 totes for 85 yards, RMU was only 4-17 passing for 43 yards. Robert Morris falls to 1-3.

Saint Francis 78 – University of Faith 0
Byron Johnson and Jymere Jordan-Toney each scored 3 touchdowns in the win. Zach Drayer threw for 3 touchdowns. Saint Francis is now 2-2, University of Faith falls to 0-4.
