Hometown Girls Volleyball Recap – Bishop Canevin Crusaders – 10/07/2015

In a highly anticipated and dramatic contest, Serra Catholic and Bishop Canevin once again faced each other atop the hard court. To recent memory over the past few seasons, it had been the home Crusaders who have dominated play over the Eagles, but Monday was a different story. Serra Catholic won this matchup on BC’s home floor in just four games.

Both teams came in at 6-1 overall in the section. Serra’s only loss prior to this had been Bishop Canevin early on this season. Canevin on the other hand had seen itself lose the game prior to this one at Vincentian and could not find a way to rebound from that tonight.

Intensity was high in game 1 as Serra Catholic rode the strength star player Lauren Kolenik’s 7 kills and 2 blocks for points.  They won this game 25-18 and saw leads as big as 10-4, 17-10, and 22-14.  Anna Schoy chipped in with some stellar digs and added 3 kills of her own.

Game 2 was a different story. Back and forth long volleys between each team seemed almost normal as the crowd screamed at every points end. Kylie Airesman of Bishop Canevin stepped up with 5 kills, and eventually the winning kill, as she blasted one cross-court just inside the line and saw her team win a crazy one 29-27.  Airesman was a standout throughout the night as she not only was the only player on the court for BC that was not a senior, but she is only in ninth grade.

In games 3 and 4 Serra Catholic found ways to pull away at the end of the matches as Bishop Canevin simply never went away.  Julia Menosky’s pace of play was terrific and she consistently capitalized with hard spikes deep past the Eagles zone.  Setting her up throughout the night was Bailey McDonald.  She could not have been more consistent. Getting to every loose ball and setting up perfect passes are just a few of the things she did correctly.  She truly gave BC a chance on every possession as she proved herself to be the best passer in the entire Single A class.  The Crusaders may have not seen themselves lose their second in a row had it not been for Lauren Kolenik.

Kolenik was unreal in all phases of the game Monday.  Her final stat line showed 21 kills, but that doesn’t begin to describe her dominance.  Her serve was strong and she consistently hit timely touch shots over the front line when they were expecting her to swing.  Anna Schoy was no slouch either.  The senior had 11 kills and seemed to be the vocalist of the group constantly keeping the spirits of her teammates high.  Another player that shined was Freshman Julia Piccolino.  The Eagles seemed to lean on her more and more as the night went on.  5 kills and 2 aces were just a part of her stat line and it should be noted that once she gains experience, she could become an even more dangerous player for others to face.

Bishop Canevin is not used to losing two in a row. It never really happens. Head Coach Kevin Walters and his squad look to rebound Thursday against Quigley Catholic while Serra takes their 7-1 record to battle Carlynton.

Without question, this may have been a foreshadowing matchup.  Bishop Canevin was ranked number 1 overall before falling tonight and Serra keeps climbing the standings.  Don’t be surprised if these two heavyweights are in the middle of every championship discussion.
