The WPIAL came into the medal rounds of the PIAA Championships with nine individuals wrestling for a gold medal. After action ended Saturday, the WPIAL ended the season with seven state champions. Of the seven that won gold Saturday, five have won more then one title in their career.

One wrestler was able to claim his third PIAA Championship, as George Phillippi of Derry was victorious at 138 pounds. He was able to pick up a pair of takedowns in the match to defeat Cole Wetzel of Boiling Springs 6-2.

The WPIAL had four wrestlers win their second PIAA Championship. Gavin Teasdale of Jefferson Morgan had no trouble at 113 pounds, tech. falling Kollin Myers of Boiling Springs 23-8 in 3:33. For Teasdale, he was able to win all four of his matches by technical fall. The next wrestler to win his second title was Mike Carr of South Fayette at 145 pounds. He picked up a second period takedown on James Duffy of Smethport, and rode him the entire third period, to win 3-1.

Teammates Jake Wentzel and Greg Bulsak of South Park were able to win back to back titles in their senior seasons. At 160, Wentzel scored an escape and a takedown in the second period, then rode the third period, to defeat Louis Head of Eisenhower 3-0. At 182, Bulsak was able to get a takedown and a cradle on Montoursville’s Garrett Hoffman to win by fall in 1:43.

Winning his first state title was Damon Greenwald of Burrell, who beat GioVonne Sanders of Jeannette for a second time this season at 152 pounds. It was 1-1 after regulation before Greenwald was able to pick up a takedown in overtime to win 3-1. Also winning his first state title was Jake Beistel of Southmoreland at 285 pounds. He scored a takedown in the first period that made the difference in his 3-2 victory over Zach Stafford of Cambridge Springs. Beistel’s state championship marks his 150th career win (a school record) en route to becoming the first state champion for Southmoreland.

In addition to Sanders, the other WPIAL wrestler to come up short in the finals was Bill Bowlen of Jefferson Morgan at 195 pounds. It was a 1-1 match late in the third when Bowlen was able to get in on a shot to get a takedown. But a quick reversal, that led to three back points, allowed Montoursville’s Gavin Hoffman to win the match 6-3.

The outstanding wrestler award was given to Athens’ Brian Courtney at 126 pounds. Courtney was able to defeat three returning state champions to win his first state title. Courtney defeated Jonathan Gabriel of Bedford (126 champ) in the quarterfinals, Cole Matthews of Reynolds in the semi finals (120 champ), and Max Murin of Central Cambria in the finals (113 champ).
