District College Football Recap for Saturday, November 17th

The NCAA playoffs kicked off in Division II and III, regular season action came to a conclusion in the NEC.

Here are recaps of all the games, including one heard here on the Network:

NCAA Division II Playoffs/First Round:  IUP 27 – Shepherd 17
The 11th ranked Crimson Hawks move onto the second round with the home victory at George P. Miller Stadium. De'Antwan Williams carried 30 times for 152 yards and a score as IUP moves on to the second round.

IUP scored first, taking advantage of a Jihad Rasheed fumble, Greg Meisner recovered and set up the Crimson Hawks at the 28 yard line. Mike Box hit Terill Williams 5 plays later for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

The Crimson Hawks had a chance to add to the lead on the next possession but Williams fumbled at the 7 yard line, Shepherd recovered to end the threat.
 

Shepherd, ranked 25th entering the game, drove down the field, Ryan Earls missed a 25 yard field goal on the second play of the second quarter. IUP returned the favor, Brett Ullman missed a 27 yard field goal wide to the right on the ensuing possession. The Rams tied the game, driving 80 yards, Bobby Cooper scored on a 18 yard run to tie the game at 7. IUP got a defensive touchdown when Cooper was intercepted by Carl Fleming at the 23 yard line, the PSAC West Defensive Player of the Year and PSAC State Title Game MVP went 77 yards for a Pick 6 and a 14-7 IUP lead at the half.
 

DJ Scott set the Rams up in great field position after a 31 yard punt return, Cooper went in from a yard out to knot the game at 14. The Rams took the lead on their next drive, Earls hit a 42 yard field goal. But the Crimson Hawks rallied, Williams capped a 10 play drive with a 5 yard touchdown to take back the lead at 21-17 after three.
 

Ullman hit from 39 yards out to make it a seven point lead with 12:03 remaining in regulation time. Cooper was intercepted deep in his own territory by Alexander Berdahl, Ullman hit a 31 yard field goal to make it a two score game. After stopping the Rams on their next drive at the IUP 42 on downs, the Crimson Hawks ran out the clock and advanced to the second round.
 

For IUP, Harvie Tuck returned to the lineup, running 16 times for 60 yards. Box was just 6-20 for 122 yards. The Crimson Hawks are now 11-1 on the season.
 

Cooper ran for 43 yards for the Rams, he was 12-28 for 96 yards. Allen Cross was the leading rusher with 13 carries for 63 yards. Shepherd ends at 8-3.
 

NCAA Division III Playoffs/First Round:  Johns Hopkins 42 – W & J 17
The 15th ranked Blue Jays advanced to the second round with the home win. The Centennial Conference champions ground out 595 total yards, including 282 yards rushing for the win to go to 10-1 on the season.
 

Robbie Matey capped off a 17 play drive on the Blue Jays' second possession with a 7 yard touchdown. After W & J turned the ball over on downs at the Presidents 37, Matey hit Daniel Wodicka for a 5 yard touchdown and a quick 14-0 lead. Scott Barletta added to that lead on the second play of the 2nd quarter with a 1 yard run. W & J got a 43 yard field goal from Eric Eberle to get on the board with 4:30 left in the half, but Johnthan Riguad scored on a 6 yard touchdown to lead 28-3 at the half.  The Presidents lost quarterback Matt Bliss late in the half after a seven yard run and a personal foul penalty against Johns Hopkins, he did not return. Kevin Mechas and Shane Smith split the duties the rest of the way.
 

Johns Hopkins drove twice into W & J territory in the third, but turned the ball over on downs twice. Scott Barletta scored on a 2 yard run six plays into the 4th quarter to make it 35-3. The Presidents got a touchdown when Mechas hit Hunter Creel with a 14 yard touchdown with 9:03 remaining. Jason Blades added a 5 yard td late to cap the scoring.
 

Rigaud led the Blue Jays with 27 carries for 156 yards. Matey was 22 of 32 for 302 yards. Wodicka caught 11 passes for 98 yards. The Blue Jays are 10-1 on the season and will travel to Alliance, Ohio to meet number one ranked Mount Union next week.
 

Dion Wiegand led the Presidents with 56 yards rushing. Mechas was 16-35 for 155 yards, Smith was 7-11 for 53 yards, Creel had 8 catches for 82 yards. The Presidents end the season at 8-3.
 

ECAC Southwest Bowl:  Waynesburg 28 – Carnegie Mellon 24
The 24th ranked Yellow Jackets finished the season with a home win at John F. Wiley Stadium over the Tartans. Dominic Moore scored the go-ahead touchdown with 3:03 remaining to give Waynesburg their 10th win of the season.
 

The Yellow Jackets scored on their first possession, Christian Jackson taking a 11 yard touchdown pass from Carter Hill. Hill was intercepted on his second possession at the 5 yard line by Liam McGrath, who tied the school record for interceptions in a season. Carnegie Mellon scored early in the second, Rob Kalkstein hit Tim Kitka for a 47 yard bomb to tie the game at 7 at the half.
 

Connor Young kicked a 29 yard field goal early in the third quarter for a 10-7 CMU lead. Moore capped a 11 play drive with a 4 yard touchdown for Waynesburg and a 14-10 lead after 3. Jared Delello gave the lead back to the Tartans 4 plays into 4th quarter on a 1 yard run. That lasted 4 plays as Hill hit Ngampa for a 74 yard touchdown and a 21-17 lead. 5 plays later Kalkstein hit Tim Swanson for 16 yards to take lead back with 8:35 remaining. Waynesburg went 13 plays and 80 yards to lead to the Moore td and the go-ahead score. Kalkstein drove the Tartans to the Waynesburg 42, he was sacked on both 3rd and 4th down to give the ball back to the Yellow Jackets.
 

Moore ran for 110 yards on 18 carries, Ngampa rushed 19 times for 96 yards. Jackson had 9 catches for 101 yards. Hill threw for 272 yards on 21-31. Waynesburg finished 10-1.
 

For the Tartans, Kalkstein was 10-19 for 188 yards, Kitka had 5 catches for 154 yards, Michael Tretalange ran 7 times for 100 yards. CMU finishes 6-5.
 

Monmouth 26 – Robert Morris 21
Monmouth jumped out to a 17-0 first quarter lead and held on for the win at Joe Walton Stadium. Julian Hayes ran for 143 yards and 2 touchdowns to go to 5-5 overall.
 

Hayes opened the scoring with a 2 yard run on the opening drive. Eric Spillane kicked a 21 yard field goal and Kyle Fraizer hit T Roberts for an 11 yard touchdown.
 

That lead held up until the opening drive of the 3rd quarter, Deontae Howard scored on a 20 yard run, Jeff Sinclair hit Duane Mitchell for a 39 yard strike and RMU was right back in the game. Spillane kicked a 43 yard field goal to put the Hawks up 20-14 at the end of three.
 

Hayes scored on a 22 yard run with 11:12 remaining, the two point try failed, Sinclair hit Mitchell for a 44 yard score at the 8:05 mark. Robert Morris got the ball back with 3 minutes left at their own 1 yard line. The Colonials drove to the 4 yard line with 28 seconds left for a first down, Sinclair threw an incomplete pass, Howard was stopped at the 3, the Colonials were forced to spike the ball to stop the clock. On 4th down, Nick Groat, last week's hero, scored, but the Colonials were called for holding. Sinclair could not find Mitchell on the last play and the Hawks escaped Moon Township with the win.
 

Fraizer threw for 258 yards on 22-27, Roberts had 5 catches to lead Monmouth. Sinclair threw for 268 yards, he ran for 54 for RMU, who finishes 4-7 overall and 3-5 in the NEC. Mitchell had 5 catches for 116 yards.
 

Wagner 23 – Duquesne 17
The Seahawks win the NEC and get the automatic bid to the FCS playoffs with the victory. Domonique Williams scored with 5:43 remaining in regulation time to give Wagner their 8th straight win.
 

After a Charlie Leventry 51 yard field goal in the first quarter, Williams ran for a 1 yard touchdown in the second. Otis Wright added a 21 yard run to put Wagner up 14-3. Larry McCoy scored on a 2 yard run with 2 minutes left in the first half.
 

That score held until the 4th quarter, Sean Patterson gave Duquesne the lead on a 6 yard run, but Williams scored from a yard out, the defense added a safety when Patterson was tackled in the end zone. Duquesne was able to force a fumble on the free kick, Patterson drove to the 10 yard line, Torian Phillips picked off a Patterson pass to run out the clock.
Williams carried 26 times for 98 yards. The Seahawks finish 7-1 in the NEC and 8-3 overall. McCoy ran 25 times for 75 yards, Patterson was 16-28 for 176 yards, Gianni Carter had 5 catches for 92 yards. Duquesne finishes 5-6 overall and 3-5 in the NEC.
 

Saint Francis 44 – Sacred Heart 24
John Kelly threw for 3 touchdowns and ran for another as the Red Flash led 24-3 at the break and did not look back. Parker hit Kevin Parker for the first td of the game. Anthony Abeid scored on a 35 yard run and Kelly scored on a 10 yard run in the second.
 

Keshaudas Spence scored on a 2 yard run for Sacred Heart, Kelly hit Dane Domonkos for an 8 yard td, Spence added a 48 yard run in the 4th, Kelly hit Dan Conley for a 8 yard td, Luke Wischnowski hit Tyler Dube for a 13 yard td with just over 5 minutes to play for the Pioneers.
 

Kelly ran 29 times for 187 yards, he threw for 58 yards. Saint Francis finishes 5-6 overall and 4-4 in the NEC .
 

Spence ran 21 times for 131 yards for Sacred Heart, they finish 2-9 overall and 1-7 in conference.
