North Allegheny junior Dom Forys earned his third straight county title, helping the Tigers to become the first school to capture three team titles at the twelfth annual Allegheny County Wrestling Championships held at Fox Chapel Area High School on Friday and Saturday, January 11-12, 2013. North Allegheny’s previous team titles at the county championships came in 2007 and 2010. Hampton and Shaler are the only other teams to have won the county title twice.

Thirty seven teams participated at this year’s event.

In Saturday evening’s much-anticipated 120-pound title match, the only championship bout that featured two returning champions, Forys rolled to an impressive 13-2 major decision win over Pittsburgh Central Catholic sophomore Vincenzo Joseph. The effort earned Forys the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler award. Also winning titles for North Allegheny were 182-pound senior Alex DeCiantis, his second county gold medal, and Jesse Rodgers, a junior, at 132-pounds.

Three seniors led Hampton to a second place finish. Edinboro recruit Jake Hart captured the 195-pound title and was named the Brotherhood of Wrestling honoree, awarded for sportsmanship. Heavyweight Noah Shulman captured his second straight gold medal, while teammate Kevin Synan also topped the podium at 145-pounds.

Pittsburgh Central Catholic’s Zach DeLuca continued his strong junior campaign, winning the 220-pound title and guiding the Vikings to a third place result. Deluca handed Montour’s Cole Macek his first loss of the season with a 3-1 decision. Central Catholic’s Kyle Coniker, also a junior, won the most exciting match of the finals, riding out Allderdice’s Brian Estep in the ultimate tie breaker period after the two wrestlers battled to a 4-4 tie in eight minutes of wrestling.

South Fayette strengthened its argument for being one of the WPIAL’s top Class AA teams this season by tying North Allegheny with the most All-County place winners with ten wrestlers standing on the podium. The Lions finished in fourth place overall and were led by senior Mike Fetchet, the 170 -pound champion. Fetchet remains undefeated at 18-0 this year.

North Hills finished Saturday’s finals with the only other two undefeated wrestlers. Tyler Walker (20-0) won the 126-pound bracket, while Jonathan Avon (15-0) earned gold at 160-pounds. In the only title bout of the evening that featured two undefeated wrestlers, Avon defeated Pine-Richland’s Brendan Burnham, 7-1. Indians’ freshman standout Gage Curry won the 106-pound bracket and recorded the most falls in the championship bracket during the tournament, four in all. North Hills had only one county champion in the previous eleven years the tournament was held. The Indians finished in fifth place.

Also capturing individual titles were Jimmy Harrison, West Mifflin (113 -pounds) and Nick Zanetta (126 -pounds).
