Abby Cunningham went 3-5 and scored three runs as the Peter’s Township Indians broke free from a second-place tie with Bethel Park on Monday afternoon in a Class AAAA, Section 4 showdown with a 13-4 victory.

The Indians pounded out 16 hits against two Blackhawk pitchers and scored five runs in both the second and fourth innings to cruise to victory.

Tori Weida also had three hits for the Indians while Kellyn Perich, Lindsay McKnight, Molly Campbell and Victoria Helser each added two hits apiece.

Bethel Park scored a pair of runs in the second inning. Jen Rimmel led off the 2nd inning with an infield base hit.  Julia Sherwin, who finished the game with three hits for the Black Hawks, then singled to advance Rimmel to second base. Two outs later both Rimmel and Sherwin would come around to score on a base hit by Kaitlyn Campbell and an Indian throwing error which, at the time, cut the Indian lead to 6-2.

Bethel Park’s other two runs were scored in the bottom of the 7th inning on singles by Molly Welsh, Shelby Reid, Rimmel and Sherwin.

With the win, Peters Township’s record improves to 7-3 (13-3 overall) in Section 4 – their next game will be Tuesday vs. Mt. Lebanon at home.

Bethel Park’s record falls to 6-4 (6-4 overall), tied with Baldwin for 3rd place.  The Black Hawks next game will also be Tuesday on the road against Upper St. Clair.
