Rain late Sunday and early Monday coupled with a shaky forecast forced the PIAA to postpone 15 of it's 16 baseball and softball Semifinals contests. The lone exception was played at high noon Monday at Pullman Park where a rematch of the WPIAL Class AA championship game from two weeks ago was played. The result in Butler was similar to the result in Washington. Here is a recap of the lone state playoff game from Monday.
Thanks to Mike Azadian for his help on this recap.
PIAA CLASS AA SEMIFINALS: Beaver Bobcats 7 – Quaker Valley Quakers 0
At historic Pullman Park in Butler in PIAA class AA Semifinals baseball the Beaver Bobcats defeat the Quaker Valley Quakers 7-0. Beaver previously defeated the Quakers in the WPIAL championship handing QV their first loss of the season.
It wasn't to be for the Quakers on this day as starting pitcher Sophomore Tyler Garbee struggled early. He walked the opening batter of the game but got out of the first inning unscathed. However he wouldn't get away with the walks in innings two. He walked the first three batters in the top of the second inning and two of them would score on a Matt Rose single to make it 2-0 Bobcats after 2 innings. "What an amazing group of guys to have played with since growing up together" said Rose after the game.
It would remain 2-0 for a long time as QV could not solve Beaver starting pitcher Austin Logan. He was perfect thru the first four innings losing the perfect game on an error in the 4th and the no hitter with 2 outs in the bottom of the 5th."I had no idea I had a perfect game going but I did know I hadn't given up a hit" said Logan on the field as his team celebrated a state final berth.
The Bobcats would tack on insurance runs off of relief pitcher Jake Pilewicz in the 6th inning as the would bat around and get 5 runs on only 2 hits. That would take advantage of 3 walks and an error and a steal of home to make the score 7-0. In the inning Logan would have a 2 RBI single and Rose would steal home.He sprinted home and was originally called out as Quaker catcher Ben Utterback dove and tagged him out but he dropped the ball and the umpire reversed his call. That would be the final nail in QV's coffin.
Quaker Valley finishes a fine season with a record of 23-2 with their only losses coming to Beaver. They will lose 7 seniors, 5 who are starters. Matt Delie went 1 for 2 with a double and Nelson Westwood was 1 for three with a triple for the only 2 QV hits. Garbee takes the loss going 4 and 1/3 innings giving up 2 runs on 3 hits, 5 walks and 2 strikeouts.
Logan went the distance for Beaver going 7 innings giving up 2 hits and striking out 5 batters while walking none. "I used an overhand curve ball and a went three quarters with a slider to go along with my fastball to keep them off pace" said Logan. Jordan Yates walked twice and singled and scored twice, whole Rose was 2 for 2 with 2 singles, 2 RBI, and a run scored to lead the Bobcats.
The Bobcats improve to 20-3 and have won 11 games in a row, their last loss coming on May 1st. They will face the winner of Salisbury and Loyalsock On Friday June 14th at 3:30 PM at Penn State University. The game can be heard on the MSA SPORTS NETWORK.
