On a gorgeous, breezy day in the South Hills, the Brashear Bulls faced the Baldwin Highlanders on a dry, sunny softball field. Both teams are very young and are in a tight Section 4 AAAA division. However, consistent pitching and excellent offense made it look like an easy win for Baldwin.

Sophomore pitcher for the Highlanders, Jaimie Schleicher started the game off strong, retiring eight out of her first nine batters faced with strikeouts. Schleicher continued her success on the other side, leading off with a single and her sub, Katie Higgins, scoring off of Melissa Paterni’s fielders choice.  Schleicher continued to battle in the circle in the 2nd, by striking out the side. Samantha Wampler led of the bottom of the 2nd with a single, Breanna Meyer would reach on an infield error, and Katie Knezevich would reach and drive home a run with a fielders choice. Schleicher then drove in 2 more runs with her hard-hit double.

The Highlanders continued to pound on offense in the 3rd inning with a double from Ana Hale and an RBI-double from Wampler. Bulls’ pitcher, sophomore Carlie Settig, had a hard time finding the zone, hitting Ashley Brady and walking in a run with Meyer at the plate. Finally, their 7th run was scored in the 4th after Charlotte Nieman was hit by a pitch and scored on another RBI-double from Wampler.

Schleicher did allow an earned run in the 6th, after the Bulls Brianna Clark smashed a double and scored on a single from Bethany Palmer.

Schleicher ended the day by allowing 3 hits, a walk, a run and 10 strikeouts in 7 innings. Offensively, she was 3-4 with 2 RBI.

Settig took the loss for the Bulls by pitching 4 innings, allowing 8 hits, 2 walks, 2 hit-batters, 7 earned runs and 2 strikeouts. Junior Kelly Flaherty pitched 2 innings for the Bulls, allowing 2 hits, no walks, no runs and 2 strikeouts.

Baldwin improves to 3-1 in AAAA-Section 4 (4-1 overall) while Brashear falls to 1-2 in the section and overall.
