Avonworth had no problem at home Monday evening with Class AAA opponent Hampton in this non-section matchup, winning 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-15) over the Talbots.
Game 1 proved to be the closest of the night, as Hampton had a 4-2 lead, but that proved to be the Talbots only lead of the evening. Tied at 6, Avonworth ran of three unanswered points to lead 9-6 and the Antelopes never looked back. Avonworth would add two more 3 point rallies and then grabbed the victory by scoring 7 of the games last 8 points.
The Antelopes jumped out to leads of 3-0 and 6-1 in game two as Hampton would get no closer than 4 points. Avonworth sophomore Whitney Brown was the key in the game two win, starting the game with 3 straight service points and then adding 5 straight points to help Avonworth to a commanding 19-7 lead.
Game three was much like game two, as the 5-7 Brown served the Antelopes to an 8-0 lead. The Talbots would get no closer than 6 points after the hot start by Avonworth and the Antelopes would coast to a 25-15 victory for the second straight game to win the match 3-0.
Net play was a big difference in this contest as Avonworth’s hitters made the difference in all three games. Senior Taylor Jenkins who missed some time due to illness played well, as did sophomores Olivia Alexander, Kimmi D’Ottavio, Brown and freshman middle hitter Erin Williams. The Antelopes were also without junior and second team all-conference outside hitter Abby Oberdick, who missed the match due to illness. Senior outside hitter Emily Stitt had some nice kills for Hampton from the left antenna as did junior Sarah Jameson in the middle. Junior libero Natalie Collins was all over the floor for the Talbots in the losing effort. Hampton dropped to (0-4) on the season with the loss.
With the non-section win, Avonworth improves to (3-2) and the Antelopes hope to take momentum from the victory into tomorrow night’s Class A Section 4 matchup with (3-1) Eden Christian.
