Hometown Volleyball Match Recap – West Allegheny Indians – 10/02/2014

West Allegheny used a multitude of point streaks and limited errors to easily defeat non-section foe Central Valley, 3-0, Thursday night in Imperial.

The Indians, who are 4-4 this season in AAA Section 5, won all three sets by scores of 25-5, 25-11 and 25-18 over the Warriors, who have a 7-1 record in AA Section 2.

Junior Lauren Long and Sophomore Allison Koester paced the Indians with 12 kills each, tied for a match high. Long also added a match high four service aces.

The first set was the easiest and most impressive for West Allegheny, as the Indians used scoring runs of 3-0, 5-0, 8-0 and 6-0 to cruise to the 25-5 victory.

“In high school volleyball, it’s tough to win any set, against any team, 25-5,” said West Allegheny head coach Brian Begor.

A big reason for the success was a lack of miscues and terrific serves. The Indians did not commit an unforced error in the opening set and posted five aces. In all, West Allegheny recorded 12 aces in the match.

Koester and Long shined bright in the second set, as they combined for nine kills en route to a 25-11 victory. In the set, the Indians had runs of 3-0, 9-0 and 6-0 to go up 18-3. But Central Valley would respond with a 6-0 run, their longest streak of the night. But West Allegheny would clamp down and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Along the way, the biggest helper to Long, Koester and Senior Audra Killen, who finished with five kills, was division one recruit Tara Savisky. Savisky a senior setter who had previously committed and de-committed from Maryland, flew high above the net all night on her sets and picked up six points along the way.

Despite Central Valley putting up a tough fight and gaining a 12-11 lead at one point, West Allegheny surged late in set three, picking up 12 points in a possible 13-point span and running away with a 25-18 victory, sealing up the match 3-0. Again, Koester and Long picked up nine kills, while Killen spiked four points.

The Indians will next be in for a pivotal matchup on Tuesday as the travel to Bethel Park (6-2). The Blackhawks defeated West Allegheny 3-2 earlier this season.

Central Valley, who received three kills from promising Sophomore Kaleah Jones and Junior Belen Brown each, will travel to Ambridge (5-3) on Tuesday. The Warriors grabbed a 3-0 victory over the Bridgers in their first meeting.

The night was enhanced by a “Dig Pink” Night, sponsored by the West Allegheny boosters, in which a number of events took place to raise money for the Sideout Foundation, a volleyball program that helps raise money for breast cancer awareness.
