One star football player and one star softball player have made their college choices this week. Pittsburgh Central Catholic wide receiver and defensive back Anthony Nixon has decided to play his college ball at Maryland while Shaler catcher Lauren Hackett will stay local and play at Robert Morris.

The 6-1 190-pound Nixon will follow Vikings teammate and quarterback Perry Hills to Maryland. Nixon who will play defensive back for the Terrapins was recruited by new Maryland assistant coach and former Pitt assistant and Duquesne head coach Greg Gattuso. Pitt had also offered Nixon a scholarship.

Hackett had a huge 2011 season this spring in leading Shaler to the Class AAAA Section 1 title and the top-seed in the WPIAL plaoyffs. She batted .604 with six home runs 28 RBIs and a slugging percentage of 1.019. She also is a good defensive catcher for the Titans who finished 16-2 after being upset by eventual champion Latrobe in the WPIAL Semifinals.
